A coupled phase-field and reactive-transport framework for fracture propagation in poroelastic media

Santiago Pena Clavijo et al.

Summary: We present a novel approach to simulate the hydro-chemo-mechanical responses in rock formations subject to fracture propagation. The proposed approach integrates reactive transport, fluid flow and transport in porous media, and phase-field modeling of fracture propagation. The approach combines PHREEQC and FEniCs to calculate the localized chemical reactions and estimate the resulting solid weakening and porosity changes. Simulation results show that ongoing chemical processes can accelerate mechanical failure and facilitate the nucleation, growth, and development of fractures.

Pore-scale phenomena in carbon geological storage (Saline aquifers-Mineralization-Depleted oil reservoirs)

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: Injecting CO2 into geological formations triggers complex processes involving temperature, water, chemistry, and mechanics. The CO2-water interface experiences pinning onto mineral surfaces, and CO2 dissolution in water leads to mineral dissolution, increasing porosity and permeability. Convective currents and periodic precipitation bands may also occur. Adequate seal rocks are necessary for CO2 geological storage to withstand excess capillary pressure without causing discontinuities. CO2 injection into depleted oil reservoirs has additional benefits such as oil recovery through swelling, destabilization, viscosity reduction, and displacement.

Co-Optimization of CO2 Storage and Enhanced Gas Recovery Using Carbonated Water and Supercritical CO2

Abdirizak Omar et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid EGR method involving carbonated water injection before CO2 injection is proposed to delay CO2 breakthrough by hindering CO2-methane mixing. Through reservoir simulation and experimental design, optimal operation and transition conditions are identified, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of the method. Simulation results show that high recovery factors and storage ratios can be achieved with minimal carbonated water injection and low recycled CO2 ratios.

Comparison of various reactive transport simulators for geological carbon sequestration

Mouadh Addassi et al.

Summary: Reactive transport modeling codes for geological carbon sequestration have significantly improved in the past decade. Comparing different geochemical modeling codes is crucial to identify modeling discrepancies, especially when experimental validation is not feasible. This study introduces and demonstrates an approach to consistently produce comparable batch-reaction modeling of kinetically controlled CO2-water-rock interactions, which are amongst the most widely used simulators for CO2 sequestration studies.
