Asthma and COVID-19 risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Anthony P. Sunjaya et al.

Summary: Compared to non-asthma individuals, people with asthma have a lower risk of contracting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. There were no statistically significant differences in hospitalization, ICU admission, and ventilator use between the two groups. Subgroup analyses showed significant differences in COVID-19 outcomes among America, Europe, and Asia.

Risk Factors for Intensive Care Unit Admission and In-hospital Mortality Among Hospitalized Adults Identified through the US Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET)

Lindsay Kim et al.

Summary: This study identified factors associated with severe outcomes among adults hospitalized with COVID-19, including age, sex, comorbidities like obesity, immunosuppression, and diabetes. Older age, male gender, and certain underlying conditions were independently linked to increased risk of ICU admission and in-hospital mortality.

Impact of cardiovascular disease and risk factors on fatal outcomes in patients with COVID-19 according to age: a systematic review and meta-analysis

SungA Bae et al.

Summary: This study found that cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors (hypertension and diabetes) were closely related to fatal outcomes in COVID-19 patients of all ages. While younger patients had lower prevalence rates of cardiovascular comorbidities than older patients, the relative risk of fatal outcomes was higher in younger patients with hypertension, diabetes, and CVD compared to older patients.

Summary: Patients with pre-existing COPD are at a higher risk of mortality and severe outcomes in COVID-19. Males have a higher risk of mortality compared to females. Identifying patients with pre-existing COPD and early interventions are crucial for this group of patients.
