Cross-cohort gut microbiome associations with immune checkpoint inhibitor response in advanced melanoma

Karla A. Lee et al.

Summary: An analysis of metagenomic sequencing of stool samples reveals the association between gut microbiome and response to immune checkpoint blockade therapy in melanoma patients. However, there is limited consistency in the microbiome-based signatures across different populations. Future studies should consider larger sample sizes and examine the complex interplay between clinical factors and the gut microbiome.

Metagenomic analysis of gut microbiome reveals a dynamic change in Alistipes onderdonkii in the preclinical model of pancreatic cancer, suppressing its proliferation

Kihak Lee et al.

Summary: Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease with poor survival rates, often diagnosed at advanced stages. Imbalance in the gut microbiome has been linked to the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer. This study established a model to investigate how changes in gut microbiota composition affect pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The results showed that the decrease in Alistipes onderdonkii in the gut microbiome was associated with growth inhibition of PDAC cells and induced unique transcriptomic alterations.

Fecal microbiota transplant promotes response in immunotherapy-refractory melanoma patients

Erez N. Baruch et al.

Summary: This study conducted a phase 1 clinical trial and found that FMT treatment in patients with anti-PD-1-refractory metastatic melanoma, along with reinduction of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, resulted in clinical responses in some patients. This suggests that modulating the gut microbiota could be a promising approach in cancer treatment.

Tobacco Smoking and the Fecal Microbiome in a Large, Multi-ethnic Cohort

Ajay Prakash et al.

Summary: The study found that smoking significantly alters the composition of the fecal microbiome, different from never smokers. Enriched and depleted taxa in smokers are consistent across different populations. Additionally, taxa enriched in smokers are positively correlated with the inferred abundance of pathways related to smoking-associated toxin breakdown and response to reactive oxygen species (ROS).
