A genomic journey in the secondary metabolite diversity of fungal plant and insect pathogens: from functional to population genomics

Eric Kuhnert et al.

Summary: Fungal pathogens produce secondary metabolites (SMs) to gain competitive advantage, but our understanding of these compounds is still limited. Recent advancements in molecular tools have allowed us to identify some of these SMs and link them to their ecological purpose. Population genomics has provided important insights into the role of these secondary metabolites in pathogenicity.

Large-scale transcriptomics to dissect 2 years of the life of a fungal phytopathogen interacting with its host plant

Elise J. Gay et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the gene expression at different stages of the interaction between Leptosphaeria maculans and Brassica napus, revealing that about 9% of the fungus genes are highly expressed during interactions with the host plant. These highly expressed genes are distributed into eight clusters, enriched in effector genes, with one cluster specific to the saprophytic lifestyle. The study suggests that genes involved in niche adaptation may be located in heterochromatic regions of the genome, providing a plasticity of expression that could be targeted for plant disease control.

An interpreted atlas of biosynthetic gene clusters from 1,000 fungal genomes

Matthew T. Robey et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed annotation and analysis of fungal biosynthetic and chemical space, enabling genome mining and discovery of fungal natural products. The taxonomic landscape of fungal gene cluster families is largely species specific, revealing dramatic differences between fungal and bacterial biosynthetic logic and chemical space.

Biosynthesis and biological function of secondary metabolites of the rice blast fungus Pyricularia oryzae

Takayuki Motoyama et al.

Summary: Filamentous fungi have numerous secondary metabolism genes producing a wide variety of secondary metabolites with unclear roles. Among them, Pyricularia oryzae, a plant pathogenic fungus, has a large number of secondary metabolism genes but only four groups have been well characterized. Activation of secondary metabolism has identified the biosynthetic genes for some of these secondary metabolites.
