Beneficial Effect of Silicon Applied Through Fertigation Attenuates Damage Caused by Water Deficit in Sugarcane

Gelza Carliane Marques Teixeira et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that supplying silicon (Si) through fertigation can effectively mitigate the damage caused by severe water deficit at 60 days after transplanting of pre-sprouted sugarcane and energy cane. The physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved are related to enhancing the antioxidant defense system, including increased activity of enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and proline content.

Low absorption of silicon via foliar in comparison to root application has an immediate antioxidant effect in mitigating water deficit damage in sugarcane

Gelza Carliane Marques Teixeira et al.

Summary: High root absorption of silicon in sugarcane attenuates water deficit-induced damage, but the low relative absorption of Si via leaf spraying compared to root application may also have an immediate antioxidant effect. The research found that foliar spraying of Si has similar or even higher physiological and biochemical effects in relieving short-term water deficit-induced stress compared to root application, indicating that the amount of Si absorbed by the plant is not a major factor in inducing an antioxidant defence response.

A sustainable robust optimization model to design a sugarcane-based bioenergy supply network: A case study

Husam Abdali et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a three-stage approach to design a sustainable sugarcane-based bioenergy supply chain network under an uncertain environment. The fuzzy data envelopment analysis method and mathematical optimization model are used to reduce computational complexity and provide a steady design. An experimental analysis demonstrates the superiority of the proposed robust model over the expected scenario model in terms of objective function mean and standard deviation.

Advancing anaerobic digestion of sugarcane vinasse: Current development, struggles and future trends on production and end-uses of biogas in Brazil

Antonio Djalma Nunes Ferraz Junior et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a versatile technology that can produce biogas for various energy demands. Brazil has great potential for biogas production, but currently only a small percentage is utilized. This article reviews the technologies for biogas production and utilization in the context of sugarcane biorefineries. The study found that connecting steam boilers to electricity generators can achieve high thermal efficiency, and a portion of vinasse can meet the diesel consumption of agricultural operations. The aim of this review is to strengthen the research on biogas systems to align with the expansion and diversification of the Brazilian energy matrix.

Soil moisture based deficit irrigation management for sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) in semiarid environment

S. K. Dingre et al.

Summary: The study suggests practicing appropriate irrigation scheduling under water shortage situations to maximize water use by providing irrigations as needed, applying less water than required, and optimizing overall production. The net increase in growth characters during a phenological stage was significantly affected by water deficit, especially during the grand growth stage. The study also found that a deficit irrigation strategy with 0% water deficit at tillering, 30% at grand growth, and 60% at maturity stage led to non-significant reduction in yield compared to water deficit free conditions and resulted in 13.3% less water use.

Silicon in Sugarcane: Availability in Soil, Fertilization, and Uptake

Monica Sartori Camargo et al.

Summary: Silicon is a predominant element in soils, but may be depleted in weathered soils, requiring silicon fertilization for increased yield, especially for silicon-accumulating plants like sugarcane. There is a lack of information on soil types and silicon concentrations in soils with positive responses to silicon fertilization.

Water deficit modifies C:N:P stoichiometry affecting sugarcane and energy cane yield and its relationships with silicon supply

Antonio Santana Batista de Oliveira Filho et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of climate change on dry matter production of sugarcane and energy cane stems, as well as the role of silicon in these plants. The results showed that water deficit altered the stoichiometric homeostasis of C, N, and P, while the beneficial effect of silicon on dry matter production was not correlated with changes in homeostasis, suggesting involvement of other unknown mechanisms.
