Design and Depth Control of a Buoyancy-Driven Profiling Float

Yulin Bai et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design and fabrication of a profiling float primarily used for thermocline observations and tracking, with a focus on its depth control performance. The proposed float is composed of a frame-type electronic chamber and a variable buoyancy system (VBS) actuator chamber. The article introduces a segment PD control method and shows the superiority of this method in diving tasks at different depths. Field tests validate the depth determination and control method, with consistent results compared to simulations. The prototype float proves to be effective for thermocline observations in the upper layer of seawater or lake water.

Design and Testing of a Miniature Variable Buoyancy System for Underwater Vehicles

Moustafa Elkolali et al.

Summary: Buoyancy-driven underwater vehicles are essential for collecting ocean data, and the Variable Buoyancy System (VBS) is often the most complex and energy-consuming component. This paper presents the design and testing of a miniature hydraulic VBS suitable for small underwater vehicles, providing detailed information on its components and performance.

The Seasonal Variation of the Anomalously High Salinity at Subsurface Salinity Maximum in Northern South China Sea from Argo Data

Hui Shen et al.

Summary: The study found that high salinity often occurs at the subsurface salinity maximum in the northern South China Sea, especially near the Luzon Strait in winter, while it tends to be located in deeper waters in summer. This suggests that outer sea water gradually mixes with South China Sea water after passing through the Luzon Strait. Factors such as the strength of the Kuroshio intrusion, local wind stress curl, and anticyclonic eddies play important roles in the appearance and distribution of anomalously high salinity in the subsurface salinity maximum in this region.

A clustering-based approach to ocean model-data comparison around Antarctica

Qiang Sun et al.

Summary: The Antarctic Continental Shelf seas are critical and rapidly changing elements of the Earth system. Evaluating the hydrography of this region in GCMs is vital, and using clustering tools can be a promising technique for assessing a larger model ensemble on a circum-Antarctic basis.
