Periodontitis severity in obstructive sleep apnea patients

Petra Stazic et al.

Summary: This study found that OSA patients with stages 3 and 4 periodontitis had higher AHI values, indicating a higher risk of periodontitis. There was a positive correlation between AHI and periodontitis severity, and factors such as age, smoking, and oral hygiene also played a role in influencing the severity of periodontitis.

Xerostomia and hyposalivation in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea

Irina Michajlovna Makeeva et al.

Summary: This study aimed to report the prevalence and severity of xerostomia in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and to assess saliva pH in these patients. Results showed that 73.3% of patients had dry mouth, with average salivary flow rate and pH decreasing with the severity of OSA. The study suggested a correlation between salivary parameters and OSA severity.

CIGARETTE SMOKING AND ITS CONSEQUENCES ON PERIODONTAL HEALTH IN TEENAGERS : A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Ivana Sutej et al.

Summary: The study showed that smokers had poorer periodontal health compared to non-smokers, and non-smokers with poor oral hygiene habits also faced similar issues. Smoking has negative effects on oral health, highlighting the importance of reinforcing smoking prevention measures and promoting oral hygiene awareness.

Oral Diagnostic Methods for the Detection of Periodontal Disease

Liza L. Ramenzoni et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic salivary tests to determine periodontal status. Concentrations of lactoferrin, hemoglobin, and leukocytes were found to be significantly higher in the stimulated and unstimulated saliva in periodontitis patients compared to healthy patients, whereas alkaline phosphatase levels were higher in unstimulated saliva of periodontitis patients. Periodontal biomarker analysis using test strips may provide a rapid and easy tool for distinguishing between periodontitis and healthy patients.

Subgingival Microbiota Profile in Association with Cigarette Smoking in Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

Kresimir Basic et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of subgingival bacteria in young smokers and non-smokers without clinical signs of periodontal disease. It was found that smokers had a significantly higher prevalence of Actinomyces odontolyticus and a significantly lower prevalence of Streptococcus sanguinis compared to non-smokers. Smoking affects the composition of subgingival microbiota, either through depletion of beneficial bacteria or an increase in pathogenic bacteria.
