Nitrogen application affects grain yield by altering the soil moisture and nitrate-N of maize/wheat cropping system in dryland areas of northwest China*

Shengcai Qiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of N application in a wheat/maize rotation system on various factors under dryland conditions in northwest China. Results showed that the appropriate N rates of 172 kg N ha(-1) for maize and 210 kg N ha(-1) for wheat led to better soil moisture uptake and NR conditions. Excessive N applications negatively affected maize and wheat grain yields, and NUE decreased significantly as N rates increased over time.

Grain Yield Stability of Cereal-Legume Intercrops Is Greater Than Sole Crops in More Productive Conditions

Martin Weih et al.

Summary: The study in seven experimental fields across Europe showed that intercropping of multiple crop species can increase average yield, but the stability of intercrop yield is not necessarily higher than sole crop yield at most locations, except one. Yield stability significantly increases with increasing mean yields, which should be considered in designing intercropping systems.

Nitrous oxide emissions and nitrogen use efficiency in wheat: Nitrogen fertilization timing and formulation, soil nitrogen, and weather effects

Shakila K. Thilakarathna et al.

Summary: Spring N fertilization reduced half of N2O emissions in the second year but increased 36% in the first year compared to fall application. Enhanced-efficiency N fertilizers significantly reduced N2O emissions and increased grain yield in the first year, with spring N application doubling the fertilizer N recovery efficiency.
