Intelligent rating method of tunnel surrounding rock based on one-dimensional convolutional neural network

Gang Yang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an intelligent classification method for surrounding rock based on one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D CNNs), which accurately predicts the grade of surrounding rock and holds great significance to tunnel construction. By analyzing the linear correlation between six collected indicators, the improved one-hot encoding method is introduced to transform non-image indicators into one-dimensional structural data and avoid sampling errors. The results show that the proposed method effectively extracts the features of surrounding rock classification indicators and accurately predicts the rock grade, demonstrating its high application value in tunnel engineering.

A comparative study of ANN and ANFIS models for the prediction of cement-based mortar materials compressive strength

Danial Jahed Armaghani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of artificial intelligence techniques to predict the compressive strength of cement-based mortars. Both ANN and ANFIS models were found to reliably approximate the strength of mortars, with ANFIS outperforming ANN but showing signs of overfitting during verification. The developed ANN model was introduced as the best predictive technique for solving the problem of mortar compressive strength.

Summary: This study uses the Maerdang hydropower station in China as a case study to propose a modified BQ system based on the relationship among K-v, RQD, and Lugeon value. The results show that the evaluation results obtained using the original BQ system and the proposed system are very similar for rock mass at the Maerdang hydropower station. Over time, adding more engineering examples will enable further verification of the proposed modified BQ system.

Experimental investigation of rock strength using indentation test and point load test

Wei-Qiang Xie et al.

Summary: This study conducted tests on blocky fragments collected from TBM-excavated tunnels to examine the effects of fragment sizes and indenter diameter on indentation indices. Results show that the indentation indices are influenced by the cross-sectional area and fracture surface area. Strong relationships were found between the modified point load strength/estimated UCS and the indentation indices using linear and nonlinear regressions.

Development of an optimal experimental model for predicting rock mass rating based on tunneling quality index

M. Mohammadi

Summary: This paper aims to develop an optimal model for determining RMR in different domains of Q. By evaluating the performance of previous models, selecting the best models for each domain, and using a simple regression method, an optimal experimental model is developed. The performance of the models is evaluated using RMSE and MAPE indicators, with results showing that the developed model is more reliable across all domains compared to other models.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between rock mass integrity, quality, and strength, describing a classification index and scheme for rock mass integrity. The study finds correlations between various indices, suggesting that alternative indices can be used for rock mass quality evaluation in the absence of a specific integrity index. However, further research is needed to validate and supplement the results presented in this study.
