Prevalence of ICU Delirium in Postoperative Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Patients

Sandra L. Staveski et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of ICU delirium in children under 18 years old who underwent cardiac surgery, as well as to identify the associated risk factors. The study found that delirium is common after cardiac surgery and several modifiable risk factors were identified.

Interleukin-6 mediates delirium-like phenotypes in a murine model of urinary tract infection

Mohammad Harun Rashid et al.

Summary: The study identified the crucial role of IL-6 in mediating delirium-like phenotypes in a mouse model of UTI, with systemic anti-IL-6 treatment showing complete reversal of neural functional impairments induced by UTI. These findings provide pre-clinical justification for further clinical investigations on the use of IL-6 inhibitors to treat UTI-induced delirium.

Associations of delirium with urinary tract infections and asymptomatic bacteriuria in adults aged 65 and older: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Damir Krinitski et al.

Summary: This study supports the association between delirium and urinary tract infection in older adults, but insufficient evidence was found for the association between delirium and asymptomatic bacteriuria in this age group. The limitations of the study include the moderate quality of included studies and a lack of available research on the association between delirium and asymptomatic bacteriuria. Future research should focus on using high-quality approaches to define delirium and UTI, and consider asymptomatic bacteriuria in their investigations.

Evaluation of systemic estrogen for preventing urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women

Kate A. Fox et al.

Summary: While vaginal estrogen has shown to decrease the risk of rUTI, the impact of systemic estrogen on UTI occurrence among postmenopausal women remains unclear. More research is needed to better understand the role of estrogen in UTI rates among this population.
