Hotspots for social and ecological impacts from freshwater stress and storage loss

Xander Huggins et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the impacts of freshwater stress and storage loss on social and ecological systems. It finds that basins with existing freshwater stress are experiencing increasing drought, posing challenges to water stressed basins globally. By mapping the global gradient of social-ecological vulnerability to freshwater stress and storage loss, 168 hotspot basins are identified as the most vulnerable, encompassing over 1.5 billion people, 17% of global food crop production, 13% of global gross domestic product, and hundreds of significant wetlands. Reducing vulnerability in these hotspot basins can bring significant social and ecological benefits.

Climate-related drivers of nutrient inputs and food web structure in shallow Arctic lake ecosystems

Edoardo Calizza et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanisms of nutrient transfer in polar ecosystems is crucial for predicting the effects of climate change. This study investigated the sources of nutrients in tundra lakes and their transfer through the food web, finding that terrestrial productivity and geese abundance interact with abiotic variables to determine nutrient inputs and affect the trophic interactions and nutrient flow in Arctic lake food webs.

Relevant factors in the eutrophication of the Uruguay River and the Rio Negro

Andres Beretta-Blanco et al.

Summary: In recent decades, rivers and lagoons in Uruguay have been experiencing increasing eutrophication, leading to water purification issues mainly due to nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. A study found that temperature, electrical conductivity, and pH are the most relevant factors affecting chlorophyll a concentrations, with land use changes not significantly impacting algae concentrations.

Seasonal overturn and stratification changes drive deep-water warming in one of Earth's largest lakes

Eric J. Anderson et al.

Summary: This study analyzes three decades of high frequency subsurface water temperature data from Lake Michigan, showing that deep water temperatures are rising in the winter. The data reveals precise measurements of key points in the lake's temperature changes, suggesting shifts in thermal regimes could have profound impacts on freshwater ecosystems.

Phenological shifts in lake stratification under climate change

R. Iestyn Woolway et al.

Summary: The study found that under high-greenhouse-gas-emission scenario, lake stratification will start 22.0 +/- 7.0 days earlier and end 11.3 +/- 4.7 days later by the end of this century. This 33.3 +/- 11.7 day prolongation in stratification will likely accelerate lake deoxygenation and impact nutrient mineralization and phosphorus release.

Climate change drives widespread shifts in lake thermal habitat

Benjamin M. Kraemer et al.

Summary: Long-term temperature changes in lakes lead to thermal habitat changes, exacerbated by seasonal and depth-related constraints. Tropical lakes show higher thermal non-overlap compared to lakes at other latitudes, and lakes with high biodiversity and endemism exhibit higher thermal habitat changes.
