How autophagy controls the intestinal epithelial barrier

Elisabeth G. Foerster et al.

Summary: Autophagy is a crucial cellular process for recycling organelles and protein aggregates, as well as destroying intracellular pathogens. It plays a key role in the maintenance and repair of intestinal epithelium, supporting intestinal barrier function and influencing the development of intestinal disease.

Risk of inflammatory bowel disease in uveitis patients: a population-based cohort study

Tzu-Chen Lo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that patients with uveitis are at a significantly higher risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) compared to individuals without uveitis. Furthermore, uveitis was found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of Crohn's disease but not ulcerative colitis.

From risk to chronicity: evolution of autoreactive B cell and antibody responses in rheumatoid arthritis

Hans Ulrich Scherer et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that B cells play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and the presence of disease-specific autoantibody responses and the efficacy of B cell-targeting therapies further support this. Insights into the involvement of autoantibodies and autoreactive B cells in the disease process have enhanced our understanding of RA. This review discusses the latest insights into how autoantibodies and autoreactive B cells relate to the development and persistence of RA.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Review of Pre-Clinical Murine Models of Human Disease

Brunette Katsandegwaza et al.

Summary: This article reviews the current murine models used for studying human inflammatory bowel disease, including chemical-induced models, gene-deficient models, and cell transfer models. The application and limitations of these models in understanding the disease pathogenesis and developing new clinical treatment strategies are discussed.

Surface Layer Protein A Expressed in Clostridioides difficile DJNS06-36 Possesses an Encephalitogenic Mimotope of Myelin Basic Protein

John E. Mindur et al.

Summary: Recent studies indicate that migration of gut bacteria may play a role in the development and exacerbation of autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. By screening for specific gut bacteria, a variant of Clostridioides difficile was identified to activate myelin-specific T cells, potentially explaining why this strain can induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. This study reveals a new potential mechanism involving a unique strain of C. difficile in triggering autoimmune responses related to MS.

Microbiota as Drivers and as Therapeutic Targets in Ocular and Tissue Specific Autoimmunity

Ryan Salvador et al.

Summary: Studies on the contribution of microbiota to tissue-specific autoimmunity driven by T cells suggest the potential of microbiota-modulating therapies for treating ocular autoimmune diseases. Further exploration of translational animal models and integration of various datasets are needed to gain a better understanding of how microbiota modulate the immune system and contribute to disease onset. Deeper insight into these interactions may lead to more effective treatment interventions.
