Microbial diversity in extreme environments

Wen-Sheng Shu et al.

Summary: This article explores the diversity, functions, and evolution of bacteria and archaea inhabiting Earth's major extreme environments. Marker gene surveys and omics studies have played a crucial role in revealing the structure, function, and evolution of extremophile microbial communities, uncovering vast uncultured microbial diversity and the predominance of archaea in extreme conditions.

Cellular life from the three domains and viruses are transcriptionally active in a hypersaline desert community

Gherman Uritskiy et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in high-salt environments exhibit unique transcriptional adaptations to local conditions, as shown in extremophile communities in the Atacama Desert. The novel Dolichomastix algae, the most active community member despite being outnumbered by Cyanobacteria, was found to play a significant role in photosynthesis. Additionally, previously unknown halophilic viruses with transcriptional activity indicative of host infection were characterized in this study.

CheckV assesses the quality and completeness of metagenome-assembled viral genomes

Stephen Nayfach et al.

Summary: CheckV is an automated pipeline for identifying closed viral genomes, estimating completeness of genome fragments, and removing host-related regions. By comparing sequences with a large database of complete viral genomes, CheckV assesses the quality of viral genomes assembled from metagenome data. Removing host contamination improves the accurate identification of auxiliary metabolic genes and interpretation of viral-encoded functions.

Polinton-like viruses are abundant in aquatic ecosystems

Christopher M. Bellas et al.

Summary: Analysis of metaviromes from an alpine lake revealed abundant Polinton-like virus genome sequences, leading to the identification of 82 new Polinton-like viruses and the discovery of five major new groups of eukaryotic viruses linked to diverse eukaryotic hosts. The study suggests that Polintons in unicellular eukaryotes are viruses, supported by the presence of viral major capsid proteins in eukaryotic host transcriptomes. The findings highlight the diverse assemblage of globally distributed viruses associated with a wide range of unicellular eukaryotic hosts, and provide a foundation for continued discovery and analysis of these viral groups.

Cenote-Taker 2 democratizes virus discovery and sequence annotation

Michael J. Tisza et al.

Summary: Viruses are abundant and mysterious, with the majority of species yet to be discovered, and many genes in central databases labeled as 'hypothetical protein'. Cenote-Taker 2 is a tool for virus discovery and annotation, offering automatic annotation of sequence features and providing rich gene information.

Osmotic Adaptation and Compatible Solute Biosynthesis of Phototrophic Bacteria as Revealed from Genome Analyses

Johannes F. Imhoff et al.

Summary: Osmotic adaptation and accumulation of compatible solutes are crucial processes for survival at high osmotic pressure and elevated salt concentrations. Glycine betaine and ectoine are the most important solutes that protect cell structures and metabolic processes at high salt concentrations, commonly found in marine and halophilic phototrophic bacteria with successful toleration of extreme salt concentrations. Transport systems for osmolytes are present in the studied bacteria.
