Deep learning identified pathological abnormalities predictive of graft loss in kidney transplant biopsies

Zhengzi Yi et al.

Summary: This study utilized deep-learning to objectively and quantitatively assess the pathological lesions in kidney transplant recipients. The findings showed that this method accurately detected and quantified the lesions, and demonstrated superior predictive ability for post-transplant graft loss. This research has significant implications for medical prediction and monitoring of transplant recipients.

Molecular diagnosis of ABMR with or without donor-specific antibody in kidney transplant biopsies: Differences in timing and intensity but similar mechanisms and outcomes

Philip F. Halloran et al.

Summary: In 398 kidney transplant biopsies with molecular antibody-mediated rejection, the 150 DSA-negative cases are earlier, less intense, and mostly C4d-negative, but use identical molecular mechanisms and have the same risk of graft loss as the 248 DSA-positive cases.

The Proteome of Antibody-Mediated Rejection: From Glomerulitis to Transplant Glomerulopathy

Bertrand Chauveau et al.

Summary: This study used proteomics to investigate the glomerular proteome modification in antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) in kidney transplantation. It identified several proteins related to cellular stress, leukocyte activation, and tissue remodeling that were deregulated in ABMR. These findings may have implications for the diagnosis and treatment of ABMR.

Convolutional Neural Networks for the Evaluation of Chronic and Inflammatory Lesions in Kidney Transplant Biopsies

Meyke Hermsen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to quantify inflammation and chronic features in kidney transplant biopsies. CNNs were applied on whole-slide image pairs to quantify various tissue features and showed high correlation with pathologists' scores. The results suggest that CNNs can provide objective quantitative information and improve kidney transplant diagnostics.

Histopathologic Features of Antibody Mediated Rejection: The Banff Classification and Beyond

Lynn D. Cornell

Summary: ABMR in the kidney can present with a wide range of clinical presentations and histopathologic patterns. The current Banff 2019 classification recognizes four diagnostic categories, but there are limitations in adequately representing the spectrum of antibody associated injury in allograft.
