Microplastics and nanoplastics in food, water, and beverages; part I. occurrence

Clementina Vitali et al.

Summary: In recent years, the presence of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) has been assessed in various environmental matrices, indicating the potential entry of these pollutants into the food web. However, there is a lack of information about plastic particles in our food, partly due to the complexity of data and difficulties in validating analytical methods. This review summarizes preliminary results on the presence of MPs in food, water, and beverages (Part I) and discusses different approaches for characterizing micro- and nano-sized plastic particles (Part II). It emphasizes the need for comprehensive knowledge of MP/NP occurrence along the food chain to assess food safety risks and implement monitoring strategies.

Automated analysis of microplastics based on vibrational spectroscopy: are we measuring the same metrics?

Mingtan Dong et al.

Summary: The traditional manual analysis of microplastics has its drawbacks, such as being labor-intensive, inaccurate in identification, and lacking uniformity. Automated analysis strategies based on vibrational spectroscopy, including laser direct infrared, Raman, and focal plane array-Fourier transform infrared imaging, have been developed. Each strategy has its advantages and limitations in terms of quantification, detection limit, size measurement, and material identification accuracy and speed.

Quantum cascade laser imaging (LDIR) and machine learning for the identification of environmentally exposed microplastics and polymers

Xin Tian et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach to identify weathered microplastics using a combination of supervised and unsupervised machine learning models. The accuracy of identification reached up to 89.7% using supervised models and additional subgroups of microplastics were detected using an unsupervised model. This approach can greatly accelerate the identification process and reduce the labeling efforts.

An ensemble machine learning method for microplastics identification with FTIR spectrum

Xinyu Yan et al.

Summary: Research has shown that microplastic pollution has been found in many coasts around the world, and Machine Learning methods like Support Vector Machines, KNearest Neighbours, and Random Forests can be used for identification and classification of microplastics using ATR-FTIR data. However, existing FTIR datasets are imbalanced and some microplastics may be contaminated, affecting the performance of ML classification algorithms. Therefore, an ensemble learning algorithm has been proposed to improve microplastic identification methods.

Simultaneous Raman and infrared spectroscopy: a novel combination for studying bacterial infections at the single cell level

Cassio Lima et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that causes approximately 11 million deaths worldwide. Raman and infrared spectroscopy, as diagnostic tools, have the potential to rapidly detect bacterial infections. This study introduces a new technology that combines infrared and Raman spectra, and demonstrates its similarity and reproducibility in analyzing bacterial samples. The findings show different clustering patterns between the two methods, highlighting the complementary information provided by microbial pigments in Raman spectra. Overall, the combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy has promising applications in clinical microbiology.
