Differentiating Catalysis in the Dearomative [4+2]-Cycloaddition Involving Enals and Heteroaromatic Aldehydes

Aleksandra Topolska et al.

Summary: The application of differentiating catalysis in the [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction between 2-alkyl-3-formylheteroarenes and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes is described in this paper. The use of the same aminocatalyst allows for independent activation of both starting materials, achieving high enantio- and diastereoselectivity through LUMO-lowering and HOMO-rising principles. The combination of dearomative dienamine activation with iminium ion chemistry further improves the outcome of the process.

Synthesis of Cyclopentenones with C4-Quaternary Stereocenters via Stereospecific [3,3]-Sigmatropic Rearrangement and Applications in Total Synthesis of Sesquiterpenoids

Weiping Zhou et al.

Summary: A cationic gold(I)-catalyzed asymmetric [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of sulfonium leads to the formation of cyclopentenones with a C4-quaternary stereocenter after cyclization. This methodology was successfully applied to the efficient total synthesis of five natural sesquiterpenoids, demonstrating moderate to good yields and excellent enantiomeric excesses in 26 examples.

New Amines and Activation Modes in Asymmetric Aminocatalysis

Zhi-Chao Chen et al.

Summary: Asymmetric aminocatalysis has become a powerful strategy for the transformations of carbonyl substances over the past two decades, with research expanding the horizon of aminocatalysis through the development of cinchona-based primary amines, HOMO-raising strategy, and amine/thiol double activation catalysis. Key experiences in research include trying something different and being sensitive to differences, with a focus on honesty and understanding in supervising students, and maintaining balance between research and family through communication. Influence from PhD director Prof. Yao-Zhong Jiang is significant.

General Pyrrolidine Synthesis via Iridium-Catalyzed Reductive Azomethine Ylide Generation from Tertiary Amides and Lactams

Ken Yamazaki et al.

Summary: This study discusses an iridium-catalyzed method for the reductive generation of azomethine ylides and their use in pyrrolidine synthesis. The method allows for the efficient access to structurally complex pyrrolidine architectures through subsequent dipolar cycloaddition reactions with variously substituted electron-deficient alkenes. Density functional theory calculations reveal the control of unusual selectivities observed in certain cases by an intimate balance between asynchronicity and interaction energies of transition structures in the cycloaddition reactions.

Combining palladium and ammonium halide catalysts for Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates of methyl vinyl ketone: from 1,4-carbodipoles to ion pairs

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates can serve as precursors for palladium-trimethylenemethane 1,4-carbodipole reactions, with reactivity and enantioselectivity finely controlled by adding a chiral ammonium halide as the ion-pair catalyst. The newly assembled intermediates efficiently undergo asymmetric [4 + 2] annulations with diverse activated alkenes or isatins, generally with high regio-, diastereo- and enantio-selectivity, and even regiodivergent or diastereodivergent annulations can be achieved by tuning the substrate or catalyst assemblies, as supported by control experiments including UV/Vis absorption study and density functional theory calculations.

Regioselective and diastereodivergent organocatalytic asymmetric vinylogous Michael addition

Chuncheng Zou et al.

Summary: This study reported regioselective and diastereodivergent asymmetric vinylogous Michael addition between beta-substituted-cyclohexenones and nitroalkenes using complementary chiral aminocatalysts. The reactions showed high enantio- and diastereoselectivities, with DFT calculations explaining the stereochemistry control through hydrogen-bonding interaction and steric hindrance effects. Additionally, the diverse configurations of the adducts led to enantioenriched spirocyclic ketones and cis-2-decalones with multiple chiral centers.
