Structure and Properties of 1237 Low-Lying Isomers of Magnesium Clusters Mgn (n=2-32) Predicted with the DFT Global Optimization

S. Panteleev et al.

Summary: Global structure optimizations were performed for the clusters Mg-n (n = 2-32) using DFT method. The study analyzed the binding energies, structural parameters, and their relationship with cluster size and morphology. The results revealed the existence of more energetically stable structures and the discovery of tube-like isomers previously unknown. Additionally, the relationship between cluster nuclearity and morphology parameters, as well as mechanical hardness/softness, was discussed.

Ionization potentials of MgN (N=7-56) clusters formed by spontaneous collapse of magnesium foam in helium nanodroplets

Lev Kazak et al.

Summary: This study determines the ionization potentials of magnesium clusters by doping ultracold helium nanodroplets with magnesium atoms. It is found that the developing foam structure of the clusters undergoes a spontaneous collapse beyond a certain size, resulting in the formation of hot magnesium clusters. The size-specific ionization potentials of the clusters are extracted and compared to theoretical simulations and liquid drop model calculations. The results provide insights into the properties and transition of magnesium clusters from non-metallic to metallic.

How Many Isomers Do Metallic Clusters Have? Case of Magnesium Clusters of up to 55 Atoms

Stanislav K. Ignatov et al.

Summary: Optimized numerous magnesium cluster structures at the DFT level to estimate the number of possible isomers, which grow with the number of atoms but are significantly lower than the number of possible nonisomorphic graph structures. Adjusted two empirical potentials of Gupta type and modified Sutton-Chen type based on the DFT results, and optimized extensive sets of cluster structures to observe the influence of the potentials on the growth of possible isomers.
