K. Bendriss et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to investigate the structural stability, mechanical, electronic, and thermal properties of the new superhard double transition-metal-based compounds Ti2Os2X4 using density functional theory. The results show that these compounds have distinct mechanical features and are anisotropic-ductile superhard materials. In addition, these materials exhibit good mechanical properties at high temperatures.

Discovery of orthorhombic perovskite oxides with low thermal conductivity by first-principles calculations

Yuchen Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on high-throughput first-principles calculations of orthorhombic perovskite oxides, aiming to explore new thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials with low thermal conductivities. The average atomic volume is identified as a possible predictor of the thermal conductivity for the perovskite oxides, and five compounds with low thermal conductivities and good damage tolerance are proposed as novel TBC materials. This research is expected to inspire the design and future functionality investigations of perovskite oxide-based TBC materials.

Ab-initio prediction of high TC half-metallic ferrimagnetism in Li-based Heusler compounds Mn2LiZ (Z = Si, Ge and Sn)

Tariq Hadji et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory, the properties of three new full-Heusler compounds were investigated, showing stable structure, ferrimagnetic ground-state, and high Curie temperature. The compounds exhibit half-metallic ferrimagnetism with a low net spin magnetic moment, in accordance with the Slater-Pauling rule. Magnetoelectronic investigation revealed strong inter-sublattice exchange interactions with a high Curie temperature exceeding 1000 K.

Ahmed Azzouz-Rached et al.

Summary: This study conducted a detailed theoretical investigation of the effects of pressure on the structural, elastic, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Mn2AlC and Mn2SiC MAX phases using density functional theory. The research found that Mn2AlC is a promising thermal barrier coating material, while Mn2SiC has a lower thermal expansion coefficient. The results of this study may inspire researchers worldwide to further explore the properties of MAX phases through experiments and theories.

Tariq Hadji et al.

Summary: By employing first-principles calculations, we investigate the properties of the new Heusler compounds Mn(2)LiZ, where Z is Al and Ga, including their structural, electronic, magnetic, and electronic transport characteristics. The compounds are found to be more stable in the inverse Heusler structure, and Mn2LiAl is identified as a spin gapless semiconductor while Mn2LiGa is nearly a spin-semimetal. Additionally, in accordance with the Slater-Pauling rule, the compounds exhibit non-conventional antiferromagnetic behavior.
