Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Zinc(II) Complexes with Dimethyl 2,2′-Bipyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate: Structure, Antimicrobial Activity and DNA/BSA Binding Study

Tina P. Andrejevi et al.

Summary: In this study, two isostructural ferrocene complexes were synthesized and evaluated for their antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Complex 1 showed moderate activity against Candida strains and higher cytotoxicity compared to complex 2. Both complexes had no effect on the survival rate of C. elegans. Complex 2 inhibited filamentation of C. albicans, while complex 1 was more effective in inhibiting biofilm formation. Additionally, the binding affinity of the complexes with DNA and protein was studied.

Nevena Stevanovic et al.

Summary: In this study, Cu(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) complexes with a specific ligand were synthesized and characterized. The complexes exhibited varying antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeasts, and a fungal strain. In cytotoxicity tests, the Cu(II) and Mn(II) complexes showed significant anti-cancer activity, with the Mn(II) complex demonstrating selectivity towards tumor cells.

Synthesis, DNA binding, antibacterial and anticancer properties of two novel water-soluble copper(II) complexes containing gluconate

Dai-Hong Cai et al.

Summary: Two new Cu(II) complexes with good water solubility were synthesized and characterized in this study. The complexes showed strong inhibitory activity against bacteria and cancer cells, potentially related to their interaction with DNA. In addition, the complexes induced apoptosis in cells through DNA damage and ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction pathways. Moreover, in vivo studies demonstrated that one of the complexes inhibited tumor growth more effectively than cisplatin.

Summary: Three new silver(I) complexes were synthesized and characterized, showing significant antimicrobial activity against various bacterial and Candida species. The complexes formed with Ag(I) ion demonstrated higher binding affinity to proteins than DNA, indicating potential modes of action for their antimicrobial activity. Additionally, the complexes exhibited low toxicity in vivo models.

Antimicrobial Resistance in the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals: A Brief Review

Mario Gajdacs et al.

Summary: Improvements in sanitation, introduction of vaccines and antibiotics play a key role in reducing infectious disease morbidity and mortality, but the development of drug-resistant bacteria can hinder progress. The Sustainable Development Goals recognize antimicrobial resistance as a global public health and societal issue, with the ongoing emergence of AMR potentially limiting the achievement of many SDGs.

Tailoring copper(II) complexes with pyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate esters for anti-Candida activity

Tina P. Andrejevic et al.

Summary: Five novel copper(ii) complexes with pyridine-4,5-dicarboxylate esters as ligands were synthesized and characterized, showing antimicrobial activity against Candida species. These complexes effectively inhibited the biofilm formation and adhesion of Candida albicans, highlighting their potential as antifungal agents. The interaction of the copper(ii) complexes with ct-DNA and bovine serum albumin was also investigated, revealing their mechanism of antifungal activity.
