Realization of tunable dual-type quasi-bound states in the continuum based on a Dirac semimetal metasurface

Hang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, two types of tunable quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) based on Dirac semimetal metamaterial (DSM) in the terahertz (THz) band are proposed. The symmetry-protected BICs are achieved by altering the structural symmetry, while the accidental BICs are realized by adjusting the structural parameters, with a high quality factor (Q factor) up to 175. Investigations on the magnetic field distribution and current distribution of the BIC and quasi-BIC reveal a common resonance mode between accidental BIC and symmetry-protected BIC, where the two LC resonance modes are strongly coupled. By dynamically changing the Fermi energy of the DSM, modulation of the transmission amplitude is achieved at a nearly constant resonant frequency, with an amplitude modulation difference of about 46%. Further application of this concept is demonstrated in the design of a Dirac semimetal film (DSF) metasurface array for stereoscopic graphic display.
