The Effect of Carbohydrate Intake on Strength and Resistance Training Performance: A Systematic Review

Menno Henselmans et al.

Summary: The effect of carbohydrate intake on strength training performance has not been systematically analyzed. Acute supplementation and short-term manipulation did not show beneficial effects, while long-term manipulation had inconsistent results. Carbohydrate intake has minimal impact on workouts consisting of up to 10 sets per muscle group, but may benefit performance during higher intensity workouts. More research is needed for further validation.

Acute Changes in Heart Rate Variability to Glucose and Fructose Supplementation in Healthy Individuals: A Double-Blind Randomized Crossover Placebo-Controlled Trial

Max Lennart Eckstein et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cardio-autonomic stress responses to different types of carbohydrates in healthy individuals. The findings showed that ingestion of carbohydrates led to a reduction in heart-rate variability. Blood glucose levels above or below 70-90 mg/dL and rapid glucose changes also decreased heart-rate variability. It is important for healthy individuals to be conscious of their carbohydrate intake and maintain blood glucose levels between 70-90 mg/dL.

Glucose and Fructose Supplementation and Their Acute Effects on Electrocardiographic Time Intervals during Anaerobic Cycling Exercise in Healthy Individuals: A Secondary Outcome Analysis of a Double-Blind Randomized Crossover-Controlled Trial

Max L. Eckstein et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of glucose and fructose supplementation on acute cardiac effects during cardiopulmonary exercise testing in young healthy individuals and found that different supplements did not significantly affect cardiac autonomic function.

The effects of glucose-fructose co-ingestion on repeated performance during a day of intensified rugby union training in professional academy players

Aaron Hengist et al.

Summary: This study found that consuming glucose-fructose mixtures after high-intensity rugby training does not enhance subsequent performance compared to glucose-based recovery drinks. Blood lactate concentrations were higher with glucose-fructose mixtures, but gastrointestinal discomfort was low in both conditions.

Acute Metabolic Responses to Glucose and Fructose Supplementation in Healthy Individuals: A Double-Blind Randomized Crossover Placebo-Controlled Trial

Max L. Eckstein et al.

Summary: The study found that fructose led to lower peak blood glucose levels compared to glucose and glucose and fructose supplementation, with no significant difference between glucose and glucose and fructose supplementation in terms of peak values. Additionally, all conditions resulted in significantly higher peak blood glucose values compared to sucralose.
