Impact of type and dose of oral polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation on disease activity in inflammatory rheumatic diseases: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis

Johanna Sigaux et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review and meta-analysis examined the effect of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation on the activity of inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs). The results showed that PUFA supplementation can improve pain and joint symptoms in IRD patients, especially when using omega-3 PUFA from animal sources with a daily intake greater than 2 g. This suggests that PUFA consumption may be a beneficial adjuvant therapy for rheumatoid arthritis.

Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and the Intestinal Epithelium-A Review

Luke A. Durkin et al.

Summary: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can positively impact epithelial cells in the intestinal barrier by maintaining cell permeability, inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and altering inflammatory markers. Further research is needed to explore the potential anti-inflammatory effects of less-studied omega-3 PUFAs.
