Novel Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles from Type IV Deep Eutectic Solvents

Lorenzo Gontrani et al.

Summary: DES demonstrates remarkable added value in the synthesis of inorganic materials, especially nanoparticles, due to its inherent and highly-tunable nano-homogeneities. This study describes the synthesis of zinc-containing nanoparticles using metal type-IV Deep Eutectic Solvents, a pathway that has not been explored before. The prepared materials have layered shapes, with pure layered ZnO obtained when zinc nitrate is used as a DES component, forming nanometric platelets that assemble into flower-like aggregates. The prepared nanoparticles exhibit intrinsic fluorescence and are being further investigated for sensor applications in contaminant detection.

Preparation and thermophysical study on a super stable copper oxide/deep eutectic solvent nanofluid

Changhui Liu et al.

Summary: Nanofluid has attracted attention as a heat transfer fluid due to its superior thermal conductivity and rheological properties. In this study, a novel one-step preparation method was developed using Cu(OH)(2) as a precursor and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as dispersing medium to overcome the poor stability and short liquid range associated with traditional nanofluids. The as-prepared nanofluid exhibited extraordinary static stability for at least two months without sedimentation and wide liquid range due to the in-situ formed Cu2O nanoparticles in DESs under microwave irradiation. The nanofluid's structural analysis and thermophysical properties were comprehensively studied, revealing that the thermal conductivity was slightly affected by the presence of Cu2O nanoparticles at low mass fractions. Importantly, the DESs-based nanofluid demonstrated promising photothermal conversion with the addition of 0.1 wt% Cu2O nanoparticles. This study provides an important approach for preparing nanofluids with high static stability.
