Fabrication and characterization of high entropy pyrochlore ceramics

Branko Matovic et al.

Summary: High-entropy rare-earth zirconates were successfully fabricated through pressureless and spark plasma sintering. Crystalline ceramics were obtained after glycine nitrate procedure and subsequent calcination. The coexistence of defective fluorite and crystal pyrochlore structures was observed during calcination, but pure crystalline pyrochlore formed after sintering at 1450 degrees C.

Selective sulfidation of metal compounds

Caspar Stinn et al.

Summary: This study proposes a metal-processing approach based on selective anion exchange to achieve efficient separation of metallic elements. By manipulating process control parameters, the target metal can be selectively sulfidized from a mixed metal-oxide feed, and the differences between sulfide and oxide compounds can be exploited for improved separation. The results of this study indicate significant reductions in energy and chemical consumption, as well as positive environmental and economic impacts.

Induced structural modifications in ZnS nanowires via physical state of catalyst: Highlights of 15R crystal phase

Sumit Kumar et al.

Summary: The study investigates the growth mechanisms and induced structural modifications in ZnS nanowires by changing the physical state of the catalyst droplet. The results show the first observation of the 15R crystal polymorph in nanowires grown via liquid alloyed catalyst, while those grown via solid catalyst exhibit crystal polytypes of zinc blende and wurtzite. The role of cohesive energies in the formation of these ZnS polytypes is calculated and discussed, along with the selection rules for the crystallization of the 15R structure in nanowires and the growth mechanisms involved.

Physical properties of novel Tin-chalcogenides heterostructures: A first-principles study

Bakhtiar Ul Haq et al.

Summary: In recent years, researchers have extensively studied van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures (HTSs), constructing four types of vdW HTSs by vertically stacking different polytypes of single-layer SnS and SnSe. These HTSs are stacked through vdW coupling and have high formation and binding energies. They are found to be indirect bandgap semiconductors, with significantly improved optical absorption due to the splitting of electron-hole pairs at the interface. These predictions demonstrate the potential applications of vdW HTSs in enhancing the functionalities of 2D materials.

Summary: This report demonstrates the successful remote heteroepitaxy of single-crystalline ZnO/ZnS core/shell nanowires using amorphous HfO2 as the buffer layer. By adjusting the buffer layer thickness, zinc blende or wurtzite ZnS epilayers can be efficiently fabricated. The cathodoluminescence measurement shows that tuning of the optical properties can be achieved by preparing a heterostructure with HfO2.

Structural and electrical transport properties of PbS quantum dots under high pressure

Summary: The study found that PbS nanocrystal quantum dots exhibit a similar structural phase transition path to bulk and nanocrystal PbS under high pressure, with coexistence of electronic conduction and ionic conduction and generally higher resistivity. At pressures above 9.1 GPa, deviatoric stress drives the fusion of nanoparticles, leading to a reduction in grain boundary effect and a significant influence on dielectric performance.

All particle types were quickly taken up by cells and induced cell apoptosis. The cytotoxicity of zinc oxide particles is mainly attributed to the intracellular release of zinc ions, regardless of size and shape.

Nicolas Perciani de Moraes et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the development of a new zinc oxide/zinc sulfide/carbon xerogel composite photocatalyst for efficient degradation of 4-chlorophenol under solar light. The ternary composite showed the best photocatalytic response among tested materials, likely due to the formation of heterojunctions and enhanced morphological properties. Further, the XC/ZnO-ZnS composite exhibited the highest photocurrent generation in chronoamperometry tests.
