Fatigue properties of Scalmalloy® processed by laser powder bed fusion in as-built, chemically and conventionally machined surface condition

Maximilian Raab et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing of metallic parts using laser powder bed fusion is appealing for applications like aerospace engineering due to the potential for high weight savings and complex designs. Scalmalloy, an aluminum alloy with high strength and ductility, can enhance this potential for lightweight design. This study aims to understand the fatigue fracture mechanisms of Scalmalloy in various surface conditions and to develop a unified model for predicting fatigue strength.

A Numerical Study into the Effect of Machining on the Interaction between Surface Roughness and Surface Breaking Defects on the Durability of WAAM Ti-6Al-4V Parts

Daren Peng et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the effect of surface roughness and machining on the durability of AM parts using LEFM and a valid small crack growth equation. The results show that the component's life is strongly influenced by surface roughness and the local radius of the curvature of the trough.

Defects in additive manufactured metals and their effect on fatigue performance: A state-of-the-art review

Niloofar Sanaei et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is emerging as an alternative method for producing unique and complex parts, with fatigue performance being a key consideration. Defects such as Lack of Fusion, porosities, and un-melted particles can affect fatigue performance, but can be minimized through process optimization and post-processing. Analytical techniques can reduce the need for costly fullscale testing for assessing reliability in fatigue performance.

Defect-based fatigue life prediction of L-PBF additive manufactured metals

Niloofar Sanaei et al.

Summary: This work presents a computational framework for predicting the fatigue life of two metal specimens, considering different treatment conditions and defect sizes. Unlike the commonly assumed crack growth mode in the literature, the appropriate crack growth mode based on the observed failure mechanism is used for fatigue life predictions. Good correlations between experimental results and prediction curves are demonstrated by using Extreme Value Statistics and equivalent defect size based on Murakami's method for approximation of the initial defect size.

Characterising and representing small crack growth in an additive manufactured titanium alloy

Muhammad Shamir et al.

Summary: The study applied the modified Hartman-Schijve equation to predict small crack growth rate in additive manufactured titanium Ti-6Al-4V, with material constants determined by long crack test data. A small fatigue crack test validated the fitted equation, and the predicted fatigue life of a specimen under bending load matched well with the test result. This work suggests that it may be possible to predict both small and long crack growth rates using the modified Hartman-Schijve equation with material constants obtained from long crack tests.
