Atomic Structure and Lattice Dynamics of CoSb3 Skutterudite-Based Thermoelectrics

Joao Elias F. S. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The local and electronic structures of CoSb3 skutterudite were evaluated using X-ray absorption technique. The analysis of extended X-ray absorption fine-structure oscillations at the Sb K-edge confirmed the body-centered cubic phase. The valence states of Co and Sb in CoSb3 were estimated based on the edge shift values, suggesting partial charge transfer from the metal to the pnictide element. The boundaries of short- and long-range order techniques for structural characterization of skutterudite-based thermoelectrics were established by comparing the results with those obtained from X-ray diffraction.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in Ternary Skutterudite Co(Ge0.5Te0.5)3 via Band Engineering

Suneesh Meledath Valiyaveettil et al.

Summary: We report the phase evolution and thermoelectric properties of a series of Co(Ge0.5Te0.5)(3-x)Sb-x compositions synthesized by mechanical alloying. Sb doping induces a structural transition and increases carrier concentration and thermopower. The carrier transport from both primary and secondary conduction bands contributes to the exceptional electronic properties. Twisting the phosphorus rings by replacing Sb-4 rings with Ge2Te2 ones effectively reduces thermal conductivity and enhances the dimensionless figure-of-merit (zT).

Vibrational and structural properties of the RFe4Sb12 (R = Na, K, Ca, Sr, Ba) filled skutterudites

Juliana G. de Abrantes et al.

Summary: The vibrational and elastic properties of RFe4Sb12 skutterudites were investigated using temperature-dependent extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and pressure-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The findings suggest that R atoms are weakly coupled to the cage in the case of light cations R = K or Ca, resembling Einstein oscillators. The study also reveals that the trend in ss as a function of the R filler is correlated with the filler-cage bonding properties.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of skutterudite Co1_yNiySn1.5Te1.5_x with switchable conduction behavior

Suneesh Meledath Valiyaveettil et al.

Summary: The researchers achieved control over the carrier type by manipulating the quaternary Sn2Te2 rings in the material's structure and enhancing electronic transport by substituting Ni for Co, thereby improving the thermoelectric power factor. This study demonstrates the potential of ternary skutterudite materials like CoSn1middot5Te1.5-x in thermoelectric conversion.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on the Structural, Electronic, and Vibrational Properties of Cs2AgSbCl6 Double Perovskite

Joao Elias F. S. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: While organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have seen rapid development in solar cell applications, challenges such as decomposition, lead toxicity, and moisture sensitivity still exist. Double perovskites, derived from the original hybrid perovskites, offer a promising alternative by replacing lead ions with a combination of monovalent and trivalent ions. The synthesis and characterization of Cs2AgSbCl6 samples for solar cell applications have shown promising results, with efficient crystal phase formation and suitable band gap properties.

Combining a multi-analyzer stage with a two-dimensional detector for high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction: correcting the angular scale

Andrew Fitch et al.

Summary: This paper illustrates the use of a two-dimensional pixel detector to correct diffraction angle errors by summing pixels from within each region of interest. By correcting apparent diffraction angles, the detector allows for a reduction in peak asymmetry, leading to narrower peaks.

Strongly reduced lattice thermal conductivity in Sn-doped rare-earth (M) filled skutterudites MxCo4Sb12-ySny, promoted by Sb-Sn disordering and phase segregation

J. Gainza et al.

Summary: Rare-earth metals have been filled in CoSb3 thermoelectric skutterudite under high-pressure conditions, leading to a phase segregation with different unit-cell sizes. This results in a dramatic decrease in total thermal conductivity and a substantial enhancement in power factor with charge transfer promoted by the filler.
