Particulate-reinforced iron-based metal matrix composites fabricated by selective laser melting: A systematic review

Yongjian Fang et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews the design, manufacturing, and analysis process of selective laser melting (SLM) of particulate-reinforced iron-based metal matrix composites (MMCs). It discusses the design and preparation of powder mixture, SLM process design, post-processing and post-treatment, as well as metallurgical behaviors, defects, properties, and strengthening mechanisms of MMCs. Particularly, it provides detailed discussions on the selection and design of layer thickness, laser power, scanning speed, hatch spacing, scanning strategy, chamber atmosphere, and pre-heating.

Review on study of internal load transfer in metal matrix composites using diffraction techniques

Pooja Maurya et al.

Summary: This systematic review enhances the understanding of metal matrix composites (MMCs) and their micromechanics by examining different diffraction-based methods of internal load transfer. Internal load transfer is significant in conventional MMCs with high volume fractions of reinforcement particles, and its mechanism depends on various factors. Advanced diffraction-based techniques, such as neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, have successfully been used to study internal load transfer in MMCs, allowing the measurement of elastic lattice strains and the calculation of phase stress. The information obtained about deformation and damage within the composite material contributes to the overall understanding of MMCs.

Microstructure and tempering softening mechanism of modified H13 steel with the addition of Tungsten, Molybdenum, and lowering of Chromium

Hengnan Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified H13 steel (CXN03 steel) with additional tungsten, molybdenum, and lowering chromium was prepared to improve the tempering softening resistance (TSR) of hot work die steels. The results showed that CXN03 steel exhibited significantly better TSR compared to H13 steel, mainly due to the excellent stability of dispersive nano-sized M2C. Recrystallization softening was observed in H13 steel but not in CXN03 steel.

Characterization, Prediction, and Optimization of Dry Sliding Wear Behaviour of Al6061/WC Composites

Thella Babu Rao et al.

Summary: The study focused on the dry sliding wear behavior of aluminum matrix composites reinforced with tungsten carbide particles processed through powder metallurgy technique. Wear properties of the composites were greatly influenced by the volume fraction of WC particles, with higher volume fractions resulting in smoother wear tracks and closely spaced grooves. The hybrid multi-response optimization approach provided optimal wear properties closely matching experimentally measured values, improving the sliding wear performance of the composites.

Microstructural and mechanical aspects of laser metal deposited H13 powder for die repair

V Braga et al.

Summary: The study examined the microstructural and mechanical properties of H13 powder deposited via laser metal deposition on H13 hot work tool steel substrates. The deposition region showed higher hardness and better wear resistance due to the presence of martensite and carbides in the matrix. The crack-free interface and consistent grain structure between the deposited layer and the substrate indicated a smooth transition in terms of hardness, suggesting lower stress concentrations.

Mechanical properties of TiC-reinforced H13 steel by bionic laser treatment

Chao Meng et al.

Summary: The bionic laser surface treatment on H13 steel can significantly improve its service life. The microstructure and microhardness of the laser alloying zone of H13 steel were refined and increased with increasing TiC fraction. Tensile strength gradually increased with higher TiC fraction, while wear resistance showed an initially increasing and then decreasing trend.
