Bulk metallic glass cantilever beams: Outstanding at large-deflection deformation and their application in complaint mechanisms

Diao-Feng Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes an effective design strategy to enhance the flexibility of bulk metallic glass (BMG) cantilever beams and identifies the influencing factor affecting the accuracy of bending modulus of elasticity. The critical boundary condition for small-deflection deformation is determined, providing a criterion to predict the potential for achieving large-deflection deformation. BMG cantilever beams exhibit unique advantages in achieving large-deflection deformation and enduring higher flexural stress, making them well-suited for compliant mechanisms in microelectromechanical systems and biomedicine applications.

Design and Modeling of a Curved Beam Compliant Mechanism with Six Degrees of Freedom

Sheng Lin et al.

Summary: Compliant mechanisms are widely used in various cutting-edge scientific and technological fields. This study proposes a compliant mechanism with six degrees of freedom based on curved beams, which has the advantages of a simple structure and multi-degree-of-freedom. A model of the mechanism is constructed using the isogeometric analysis method, and static analysis shows the generation of six degrees of freedom. A prototype is developed using 3D printing, and a loading test in six degrees of freedom is carried out, showing high linear relations between output and input and low inter-directional coupling of the structure.

Summary: This article presents a nonlinear model of an inversion-based generalized cross-spring pivot (IG-CSP), which can be employed for geometric error analysis and characteristic analysis. The effects of load-dependent factors, such as loading positions, geometric parameters, and axial forces, are investigated. The load-rotation relationships and center shifts of different types of cross-spring pivots are derived and compared. Furthermore, two new compound symmetric cross-spring pivots are proposed and analyzed.

Compliant gripper design, prototyping, and modeling using screw theory formulation

Irfan Hussain et al.

Summary: This article investigates the design, modeling, prototyping, and testing of soft-rigid tendon-driven grippers, using the design and development of a two-finger soft gripper as a case study. A mathematical formulation based on screw theory is proposed to model gripper dynamics, allowing for different behaviors to be achieved by varying the properties of its passive deformable joints. Experiments with a prototype and an optical tracking system were conducted to validate the proposed mathematical formulation and to assess the gripper's performance in terms of payload, maximum horizontal resisted force, and grasping capabilities.

Design and modeling of an improved bridge-type compliant mechanism with its application for hydraulic piezo-valves

Mingxiang Ling et al.

Summary: In this paper, an improved bridge-type compliant mechanism with double output ports is presented, which can generate homodromous bi-motions actuated by only one group of piezo-stacks to avoid inertial motion and enhance dynamic bandwidth. The mechanism's dynamic characteristics are captured through a two-port dynamic stiffness model, allowing for optimal performance confirmation. This mechanism is further applied to develop a piezoelectric two-stage flow control valve with fast dynamic response and large flow rate, effectively overcoming issues of inner leakage and oil contamination.
