Modified spiral folding pattern for deployable membranes

P. M. Liyanage et al.

Summary: Solar sails offer propellant-free propulsion for small spacecraft and require deployable concepts. Neglecting the geometric effects of membrane thickness in stored configuration can lead to plastic deformations and wrinkling, prompting the development of a modified fold-line arrangement to address these issues.

Origami-based cellular mechanical metamaterials with tunable Poisson's ratio: Construction and analysis

Shengnan Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel family of cellular mechanical metamaterials based on rigid foldable square-twist origami, with tunable Poisson's ratios achieved by adjusting design factors. The kinematics, rigid-foldability, and influences of various combination schemes on in-plane and out-plane Poisson's ratios of square-twist origami are studied. Following a mapping relationship between design factors and Poisson's ratio, cellular mechanical metamaterials with tunable Poisson's ratios can be designed for engineering applications.

Thick-panel Origami Cube

Yuanqing Gu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for constructing a novel thick-panel origami cube by replacing the equivalent 4 R-spherical linkage with a plane-symmetric Bricard linkage. The proposed thick-panel vertex preserves the kinematics of the original four-crease origami vertex and is used to construct a thick-panel cube based on a zero-thickness origami cube. Through mechanism decomposition and investigation of geometric constraints and kinematic properties, the study reveals the kinematic equivalence between the thick-panel and zero-thickness forms of the origami cube, with potential applications in aerospace exploration, robotics, and architecture.
