Beating the limitation of the Neel temperature of FeO with antiferromagnetic proximity in FeO/CoO

A. Koziol-Rachwal et al.

Summary: The influence of the proximity of an antiferromagnetic CoO layer on the magnetic properties of ultrathin wustite films (FeO) is investigated in this study. Comparative Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements reveal that the neighboring CoO layer can significantly enhance the ordering temperature of wustite. Moreover, the proximity of antiferromagnetic CoO strongly affects the exchange interaction at the Fe/FeO interface, resulting in an enhancement in the exchange bias field and blocking temperature in the Fe/FeO/CoO heterostructure.

Cryo-EM reconstructions of BMV-derived virus-like particles reveal assembly defects in the icosahedral lattice structure

Milosz Ruszkowski et al.

Summary: With the growing interest in virus-like particles (VLPs), research on their assembly and application has increased. However, the complex formation of complete VLPs makes it challenging to design them with desired features. In this study, VLPs assembled in vitro from the recombinant capsid protein of brome mosaic virus (BMV) were analyzed using Cryo-EM reconstructions, providing insights into the self-assembly process of VLPs. The study described various classes of VLPs, including intermediates with non-icosahedral arrangements, and highlighted the importance of proper protein-shell interaction for the successful assembly of VLPs.

Systemic consequences of disorder in magnetically self-organized topological MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n superlattices

Joanna Sitnicka et al.

Summary: The MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)(n) materials system shows promise for realizing the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, but the presence of disorder has significant effects on its properties. The migration of Mn atoms between different layers induces coupling between the ferromagnetic layers and non-magnetic layers, affecting the system's behavior and surface band structure.

Tailorable exchange bias and memory of frozen antiferromagnetic spins in epitaxial CoO(111)/Fe(110) bilayers

M. Slezak et al.

Summary: In this study, exchange bias and interfacial antiferromagnetic spin orientation in epitaxial CoO(111)/Fe(110) bilayers were investigated. Experimental results revealed that exchange bias occurs in the zero-field-cooled system and is influenced by the in-plane magnetic state of the Fe(110) sublayer and the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the Fe layer. The specific magnetic state chosen for the Fe sublayer can determine the axis and direction of interfacial antiferromagnetic spins after the sample is cooled.

Influence of Doping on the Topological Surface States of Crystalline Bi2Se3 Topological Insulators

Kamil Nowak et al.

Summary: In this study, we used STM/STS, ARPES, and magnetotransport techniques to investigate the surface topography and electronic structure of pristine Bi2Se3, as well as doped Bi1.96Mg0.04Se3 and Bi1.98Fe0.02Se3. We found a large number of complex, triangle-shaped defects on the surface and observed that the local electronic structure at the defects was influenced by doping in the same way as the electronic structure of the undefected surface. ARPES measurements provided additional information about the electronic structure, showing the dependence of bulk and surface electronic bands on doping. Magneto-transport measurements confirmed the subtle changes in the surface electronic structure induced by doping.

Programmable polymorphism of a virus-like particle

Artur P. Biela et al.

Summary: Virus-like particles (VLPs) have potential for drug delivery systems and vaccine development, but controlling their size and morphology is challenging. In this study, amino acid sequences were inserted into MS2 bacteriophage VLPs to control their size and shape. The resulting VLP size and geometry can be controlled by altering the length and type of the insert.

SMART mineral mapping: Synchrotron-based machine learning approach for 2D characterization with coupled micro XRF-XRD

Julie J. Kim et al.

Summary: The SMART mineral mapping approach developed in this study combines synchrotron-based machine learning, micro-scale XRF and XRD data analysis, and neural network techniques to accurately identify minerals in rock thin sections. The trained classifier was able to achieve a high accuracy rate in identifying minerals based solely on mu XRF data, demonstrating the efficiency and transferability of the SMART mapper in mineral mapping and characterization.
