Emergence of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant, salient features, high global health concerns and strategies to counter it amid ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

Rekha Khandia et al.

Summary: Since December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has been rapidly evolving and mutating, leading to various variants with different levels of infectivity and lethality. The most recent variant of concern is Omicron (B.1.1.529), which has raised concerns about its ability to evade pre-existing immunity and overcome antibody-based therapies. Several theories have been proposed to explain the high number of mutations in Omicron. To successfully handle the ongoing pandemic, a multifaceted approach including rapid diagnosis, genome analysis, vaccination, and updated medical facilities is needed.

Risk factors and disease profile of post-vaccination SARS-CoV-2 infection in UK users of the COVID Symptom Study app: a prospective, community-based, nested, case-control study

Michela Antonelli et al.

Summary: Despite the high efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, some individuals still become infected with SARS-CoV-2 post-vaccination. Risk factors for post-vaccination infection include frailty in older adults, living in deprived areas, and obesity. Vaccination is associated with reduced odds of severe symptoms and long-duration illness. The findings suggest the importance of targeting at-risk populations and maintaining infection control measures even in vaccinated individuals.

Association between BNT162b2 vaccination and reported incidence of post-COVID-19 symptoms: cross-sectional study 2020-21, Israel

Paul Kuodi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between vaccination with the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine and long-term COVID-19 symptoms in individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that individuals who received two doses of the vaccine were less likely to report symptoms such as fatigue, headache, weakness of limbs, and persistent muscle pain compared to those who were unvaccinated. Vaccination with the BNT162b2 vaccine may have a protective effect against longer-term COVID-19 symptoms.

Attributes and predictors of long COVID

Carole H. Sudre et al.

Summary: Reports on long-lasting COVID-19 symptoms, known as 'long COVID', are increasing. Analysis of data from over 4,000 COVID-19 cases revealed that long COVID is more common in older individuals, those with higher body mass index, and females. Experiencing more than five symptoms in the first week of illness was associated with long COVID. A simple model showed promise in distinguishing between short and long COVID cases early in the disease.

GP consultation rates for sequelae after acute covid-19 in patients managed in the community or hospital in the UK: population based study

Hannah R. Whittaker et al.

Summary: The study described the rates for consulting a general practitioner for sequelae after acute covid-19 infection in patients admitted to hospital and those managed in the community. It found differences in sequelae rates between these two groups, with some sequelae decreasing over time while others, such as anxiety and depression, persisted in the community. Rates of some outcomes decreased after vaccination for covid-19.
