Boosting H2 Production from a BiVO4 Photoelectrochemical Biomass Fuel Cell by the Construction of a Bridge for Charge and Energy Transfer

Zhaoqi Wang et al.

Summary: Using photoelectrochemical (PEC) fuel cells to oxidize organic wastes instead of water is an effective method to improve H2 production efficiency. In this study, a unique BiVO4 PEC fuel cell was developed by utilizing cost-effective tartaric acid as an organic fuel. The BiVO4 PEC fuel cell not only improved the photoelectric conversion efficiency, but also effectively converted the chemical energy of biomass into H2.

Strain-assisted in-situ formed oxygen defective WO3 film for photothermal-synergistic reverse water gas shift reaction and single-particle study

Yayang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, an oxygen defective WO3 film was synthesized through strain and the introduction of light and reactant, serving as an efficient catalyst for the reverse water gas shift reaction with a strong photothermal-synergistic effect. The in-situ single-particle study demonstrated prolonged charge carrier lifetime and enhanced photoluminescence intensity. The CO production rate of the WO3 film was found to be nearly 10 times that of powder, indicating an intense photothermal-synergistic effect.

Simultaneous harnessing of hot electrons and hot holes achieved via n-metal-p Janus plasmonic heteronanocrystals

Xiaodong Wan et al.

Summary: Plasmonic hybrid nanostructures have great potential in energy conversion materials for photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and photodetectors. Constructing nanostructures that can simultaneously harness hot electrons and hot holes has been a challenge, but by creating binary energy flow channels across plasmonic/semiconductor interfaces, it is possible to exploit plasmonic hot carriers. This approach has been demonstrated in the fabrication of n-M-p heteronanocrystals, which show atomically organized interfaces and exhibit superior performance in photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Isolated Cobalt Centers on W18O49 Nanowires Perform as a Reaction Switch for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Huabin Zhang et al.

Summary: By successfully decorating isolated cobalt atoms onto the surface of ultrathin W18O49 nanowires, the charge carrier separation and electron transport in the catalytic system are greatly accelerated. The modification of the energy configuration of the W18O49@Co hybrid by surface decoration with cobalt atoms also enhances the redox capability of photoexcited electrons for CO2 reduction. The decorated cobalt atoms serve as the real active sites and act as a reaction switch to facilitate the reaction process.

Summary: Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is induced by collective oscillations of free carriers with light, making plasmonic semiconductors promising candidates for photocatalysis. These materials show strong LSPR in visible and near-infrared regions, allowing for broad absorption and efficient solar energy conversion. Research is ongoing to better understand the unique properties and mechanisms of LSPR-enhanced photocatalysis with plasmonic semiconductors.
