Transfer hydrogenation of carbonates using glucose to produce formates and gluconates is an attractive pathway for valorising waste streams. The investigation reveals a cooperative catalytic mechanism and composition-dependent behaviour of PtxPdy/CNTs catalysts. Insights into the mechanism will allow transfer hydrogenation of carbonates at room temperature to be widely utilized.
