Respiratory problems in preterm infants with pulmonary hemorrhage

Aydin Bozkaya et al.

Summary: This study found that pulmonary hemorrhage is associated with respiratory morbidities in preterm infants, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and prolonged respiratory support. Infants with pulmonary hemorrhage also had higher rates of other morbidities, such as retinopathy of prematurity and prolonged hospitalization.

Elevated Plasma Levels of Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 and Tissue-Inhibitor of Matrix Metalloproteinases-1 Associate With Organ Dysfunction and Mortality in Sepsis

Tiffanie K. Jones et al.

Summary: This study found that plasma levels of TIMP-1 and MMP-3 are associated with shock, ARDS, AKI, and mortality in sepsis patients. These findings suggest that the levels of these proteins in plasma may play an important role in the development and prognosis of sepsis.

Correlation of Vitamin D Deficiency with Predictors of Mortality in Critically Ill Children at a Tertiary Care Centre in North India-A Prospective, Observational Study

Shilpa Bansal et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and various demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, and predictors of mortality. The results showed a significant correlation between vitamin D deficiency and age, season, height, and weight, as well as factors such as bacteriuria, cardiovascular sequential sepsis-related organ failure assessment score, and mechanical ventilation. Vitamin D deficiency was identified as a significant risk factor for mechanical ventilation requirement, bacteriuria, and mortality.

C-Reactive Protein, Procalcitonin, and White Blood Count to Rule Out Neonatal Early-onset Sepsis Within 36 Hours: A Secondary Analysis of the Neonatal Procalcitonin Intervention Study

Martin Stocker et al.

Summary: The study found that normal serial CRP and PCT measurements within 36 hours after the start of empiric antibiotic therapy can exclude the presence of neonatal EOS with a high probability. The AUCs for CRP and PCT increase with extended time frames, but there is no further difference beyond 36 hours.

Summary: The study found that vitamin D deficiency in children may be associated with increased risk of infection, mortality score, length of hospital stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation in critically ill children, suggesting the importance of testing and supplementing vitamin D levels in this population.

Monitored Supplementation of Vitamin D in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Alicja Kolodziejczyk-Nowotarska et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of monitored vitamin D supplementation in preterm infants. Results showed that a higher percentage of infants in the monitored group had safe vitamin D levels, while potential vitamin D toxicity was observed in the standard treatment group. Therefore, vitamin D intake should be between 800-1000 IU and monitored to avoid overdose.

Clinical Presentation and Multifactorial Pathogenesis of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in the Preterm Infant

Rachael E. Andrews et al.

Summary: NEC is a serious infection of the bowel wall induced by multiple pathological factors, commonly seen in premature infants. Understanding the underlying factors that create an optimal environment for disease acquisition is essential for diagnosis and treatment. Preventing NEC remains the most important strategy for decreasing morbidity and mortality, with multiple areas of potential study existing for NEC pathophysiology.

Relationship between maternal vitamin D status in the first trimester of pregnancy and maternal and neonatal outcomes: a retrospective single center study

Meng Ni et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in eastern coastal China during the first trimester of pregnancy. The group with vitamin D insufficiency had a higher incidence rate of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, while the vitamin D deficiency group was more susceptible to intrauterine infection. Importantly, low vitamin D levels in the first trimester of pregnancy were a dependent risk factor for NICU admission.

Effects of vitamin D on neonatal sepsis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Zebenay Workneh Bitew et al.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent among neonates, especially those with sepsis. Low maternal and cord blood levels of vitamin D are significantly associated with an increased risk of neonatal sepsis. Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with vitamin D could help decrease the incidence of neonatal sepsis.
