Metallic core-shell nanoparticles for conductive coatings and printing

Anna Pajor-Swierzy et al.

Summary: The review focuses on bimetallic nanoparticles consisting of a low-cost, high electrical conductivity metal core (such as Cu and Ni) and a protective shell made of a stable, oxidation-resistant noble metal (such as Ag or Au). The synthesis methods, including chemical and physical approaches, as well as their combination, are discussed. The review also covers the stability to oxidation of the core-shell nanoparticles under various conditions, and the formulation of conductive compositions and their application in conductive coatings and printed electronics.

From Precision Colloidal Hybrid Materials to Advanced Functional Assemblies

Veikko Linko et al.

Summary: Colloids encompass a wide range of particles, including synthetic nanoparticles and functional biological units. While synthetic colloids have been extensively researched, they often suffer from imperfections in size, shape, and interactions. In contrast, biological colloids offer precision in these aspects. Inspired by biological systems, materials science is exploring ways to achieve structural control and novel functionality in synthetic colloids. This includes guided assemblies of biological motifs, DNA nanotechnology-based assemblies, and atomically precise structures. The goal is to develop stimulus-responsive colloids with complex functions, similar to biological learning. By controlling colloidal size and dispersity, various functionalities can be achieved.

High-Efficiency FRET Processes in BODIPY-Functionalized Quantum Dot Architectures

Annamaria Panniello et al.

Summary: Efficient FRET systems were developed by combining colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) donors and BODIPY acceptors. The optimization of the distance between the organic fluorophore and the QDs through careful system engineering led to effective energy transfer in solution and solid state, with efficiencies reaching 76%. Deposition of QDs and dye as single coordinated units in solid state further increased efficiency by reducing the distance between the fluorophores to 2.2 nm, demonstrating the effectiveness of the coupling strategy.
