Are Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts an Alternative to Pt-Based Electrocatalysts for the Next Generation of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells?

Xiong Zhang et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the notable progress in the development of low Pt-based and Fe-N-C electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications. The research focuses on the design and optimization of Fe-N-C's as a cost-effective alternative to platinum-based catalysts. By comparing the performance of Fe-N-C's with that of commercial Pt/C catalysts, it is suggested that Fe-N-C's have the potential to be alternative candidates in PEMFCs. The review discusses various aspects including the mechanism, active sites, catalyst layer design, performance, and durability of Fe-N-C's in PEMFCs, aiming to provide insights into their potential as replacements for Pt-based catalysts and pointing out future research directions.

Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts' Durability: Effects of Single Atoms' Mobility and Clustering

Kavita Kumar et al.

Summary: Second pyrolysis of Fe-N-C catalysts leads to larger mesopore size, higher iron content, and N-pyridinic moieties, resulting in improved ORR activity and selectivity. Aging morphology of catalysts varies significantly depending on whether they underwent a second pyrolysis, with Fe-clusters formation and partial corrosion observed in Fe-HT2 after load cycling aging at 80 degrees C. No clustering was observed at 60 degrees C, suggesting potential guidelines for enhancing stability of Fe-N-C materials.

Summary: Fe-N-C aerogel catalysts were prepared by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol, melamine, and formaldehyde precursors in the presence of FeCl3 salt. The study investigated the effect of precursor mass ratio on the microstructure, iron speciation, and ORR performance of Fe-N-C aerogels, finding that the best ORR performance was achieved through an optimal balance between pore structure and active Fe-Nx species.
