Mastering the surface strain of platinum catalysts for efficient electrocatalysis

Tianou He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that by depositing ultrathin Pt shells on palladium-based nanocubes, strain in the Pt(100) lattice can be induced and adjusted, leading to tunable electrocatalytic activity for specific reactions. By controlling the lattice strain, the researchers were able to optimize the performance of Pt catalysts for a wide range of reactions, showing different strain-activity correlations for different reactions.

Direct methane activation by atomically thin platinum nanolayers on two-dimensional metal carbides

Zhe Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that atomically thin Pt nanolayers supported on MXene can efficiently catalyze the conversion of methane to ethane/ethylene, operating for 72 hours at high temperatures with >98% selectivity, providing important insights into designing highly active and stable catalysts.

Bimetallic monolayer catalyst breaks the activity-selectivity trade-off on metal particle size for efficient chemoselective hydrogenations

Qiaoqiao Guan et al.

Summary: The precise deposition of a platinum monolayer on large gold nanoparticles breaks the trade-off between activity and selectivity, resulting in high activity and 99% selectivity in the platinum-catalysed hydrogenation of halonitrobenzenes. This breakthrough is attributed to the upshift of the platinum 5d-band centre through platinum lattice expansion and ligand effect, as well as the exposure of more terrace sites on large particles, providing a promising platform for the rational design of metal catalysts with superior performance in hydrogenation reactions.

Jessi E. S. van der Hoeven et al.

Summary: The study investigates the performance of an Au-Pd core-shell catalyst in the selective hydrogenation of butadiene, showing shell-thickness-dependent catalytic activity, high selectivity, and activity up to 50 times greater than that of alloyed counterparts.

Support-Induced unusual size dependence of Pd catalysts in chemoselective hydrogenation of para-chloronitrobenzene

Xiaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: Pd nanoparticles supported on oxygen-functionalized carbon black exhibit an unexpected inverse trend of selectivity compared to those on carbon black. The balance of positive Pd delta+ species strongly modulates the competitive adsorption of different groups on the substrate, affecting the chemoselectivity of the catalytic reaction.
