Tuning the Transport Properties of Gases in Porous Graphene Membranes with Controlled Pore Size and Thickness

Timur Ashirov et al.

Summary: This study introduces a pore-narrowing approach via gold deposition onto porous graphene surfaces to enhance gas separation efficiency. Through a systematic method, the ideal combination of pore size and membrane thickness is determined to achieve high selectivity and permeance. By comparing the binding energies of gas molecules with the Au surface, the increased surface-gas interactions and molecular-sieving effect with decreasing pore size are explained.

High-Index Organic Polymeric Carbon Nitride-Based Photonic Devices for Telecommunication Wavelengths

Julya Stein Siena et al.

Summary: Organic semiconductors have been widely used in integrated photonics due to their appealing material properties and ease of fabrication. Polymeric carbon nitride thin films, as a valuable alternative to inorganic materials, offer structural flexibility, transparency over a wide wavelength range, and accessible synthesis. This study demonstrates the application of organic polymeric carbon nitride-based nanophotonic devices for telecommunication wavelengths, achieving small device footprint, strong mode confinement, and efficient fiber-to-chip coupling.

Gas Transport across Carbon Nitride Nanopores: A Comparison of van der Waals Functionals against the Random-Phase Approximation

Mohammad Tohidi Vahdat et al.

Summary: C2N is a promising two-dimensional carbon nitride for highflux gas sieving, with potential for efficient He and H-2 purification. Various density-functional theory calculations using different van der Waals approximations suggest high selectivities for C2N nanopores, while adsorption energies and barriers vary significantly depending on the approximation chosen. Empirical corrections are found to work reasonably well, especially when compared with more accurate approaches like adiabatic connection fluctuation dissipation theory.

Ultrahigh permeance metal coated porous graphene membranes with tunable gas selectivities

Timur Ashirov et al.

Summary: Membranes are crucial in gas separation for their low cost, energy efficiency, and durability. Researchers have developed a new concept to enhance selectivity of graphene-based membranes by depositing microislands of Pd and Ni on the support layer, enabling efficient separation of specific gases like H2 and CO2. This approach may offer a promising alternative for economical gas separation by selectively targeting individual gases in a membrane setting through adsorptive separation at room temperature.
