Bioinspired Soft Robotic Fingers with Sequential Motion Based on Tendon-Driven Mechanisms

Yin Zhang et al.

Summary: Soft robotic grippers face challenges in conformability due to continuous motion and deformation under external force. A novel tendon-driven soft robotic finger inspired by human finger movement was proposed, with preprogrammed bending configuration and sequential motion achieved through stiffness gradients. Experimental results showed that fingers with sequential motion exhibited excellent conformability on object surfaces with various curvatures and deformability could be adjusted by changing joint stiffness.

Controlling Palm-Object Interactions Via Friction for Enhanced In-Hand Manipulation

Clark B. Teeple et al.

Summary: Researchers demonstrated how controlling the interaction between the palm and objects enables different modes of in-hand manipulation. They discussed the influence of palm properties, such as friction force and normal load, on grasp stability, and showcased how objects can be translated and rotated within the hand through synchronized palm and finger actions.

Bird-inspired dynamic grasping and perching in arboreal environments

W. R. T. Roderick et al.

Summary: The researchers developed a biomimetic robot based on how birds take off, land, and grasp, allowing it to dynamically perch on complex surfaces and grasp irregular objects. The robot passively transforms impact energy into grasp force and uses an underactuated grasping mechanism to quickly grasp irregularly shaped objects.

Complex manipulation with a simple robotic hand through contact breaking and caging

Walter G. Bircher et al.

Summary: Humans utilize all surfaces of the hand for contact-rich manipulation, whereas robot hands typically only use the fingertips, limiting their dexterity. By simulating various finger topologies and designing a two-fingered dexterous hand, researchers were able to create a robot hand capable of continuous object reorientation and the ability to alternate between power and pinch grasps.

Controlling subterranean forces enables a fast, steerable, burrowing soft robot

Nicholas D. Naclerio et al.

Summary: Robotic navigation on land, through air, and in water is well researched, but subterranean navigation remains largely unexplored due to higher interaction forces and lack of fundamental physics understanding. By deriving hypotheses from biological observation and physics of granular intrusion, researchers designed a burrowing robot that can control lift and drag forces underground, achieving faster burrowing than previous approaches. This advancement in robotic subterranean locomotion showcases the potential for future exploration in underground environments.
