Tilapia farming based on periphyton as a natural food source

Luiz H. David et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different feeding management strategies in periphyton-based systems on Nile tilapia production in ponds. The results showed that feeding fish 100% of the recommended amount of feed can increase biomass gain and productivity, while sharing effluent with periphyton can enhance the efficiency of the periphyton-based system.

Protective effects of the biofloc system in Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) culture against pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection

Muhamad Gustilatov et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the application of a biofloc system in protecting Pacific white shrimp from pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection. The results show that the biofloc system can significantly reduce the density and biofilm activity of V. parahaemolyticus, and improve the survival, growth, and immune response of the shrimp. This suggests that biofloc system could be an effective method to control vibriosis in shrimp culture.

Surfactants of microbial origin as antibiofilm agents

Katarzyna Paraszkiewicz et al.

Summary: Biosurfactants are universal molecules produced by microorganisms, exhibiting surface properties often accompanied by desired biological activity. Due to their low toxicity and biodegradable nature, biosurfactants are considered environmentally 'friendly' and have potential applications in various industries. Their antibacterial and antifungal activities make them relevant for inhibitory agents against microbial biofilm, with recent advances in research focusing on their role as antibiofilm agents.

Bacterial communities and predicted nitrogen metabolism of heterotrophic- and probiotic-based biofilms used for super-intensive indoor shrimp culture

Angel Martin Ortiz-Estrada et al.

Summary: Biofilm-based aquaculture systems offer a promising alternative for intensive shrimp rearing, with microorganisms in biofilms playing a crucial role in recycling nitrogen compounds and improving water quality. By comparing heterotrophic and probiotic biofilms, differences in taxonomic profiles and nitrogen metabolism functions were observed, impacting water quality and shrimp survival rates. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of maintaining a balance of nitrogen metabolism functions for optimal water quality in aquaculture systems.

Bacterial coaggregation in aquatic systems

Ana C. Afonso et al.

Summary: Bacterial coaggregation is believed to be a key step in the formation of sessile communities in aquatic systems, with bacteria capable of autoaggregation and coaggregation being found in various aquatic systems. The coaggregation mechanism plays an important role in the development and stability of multispecies biofilms, particularly with potential implications for controlling undesirable biofilms in wastewater treatment plants.

Periphytic Biofilm Formation on Natural and Artificial Substrates: Comparison of Microbial Compositions, Interactions, and Functions

Lingzhan Miao et al.

Summary: This study compared the community structure, co-occurrence network, and metabolic functions of bacterial and microeukaryotic periphytic biofilms on different artificial and natural substrates, finding that artificial substrates impacted the composition and functional diversity of biofilms, with bacterial networks on artificial substrates being more complex and stable. Additionally, the functional metabolic profiles showed that bacterial communities on artificial substrates had stronger abilities to metabolize nitrogen and carbon sources compared to natural substrates. These findings suggest that artificial substrates can provide special niches for microbial colonisation, potentially altering microbial compositions, interactions, and functions.

How Do Quorum-Sensing Signals Mediate Algae-Bacteria Interactions?

Lachlan Dow

Summary: Quorum sensing is a process where bacteria can sense their own species' cell density, coordinating gene expression and physiological processes on a community-wide scale. QS signals not only mediate intraspecies interactions, but also interactions between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, playing a role in altering microalgae growth, metabolism, and nutrient acquisition.
