Evaluation of the Undergraduate Learning Environment at Dental Schools in Syria

Bridging the gap between self-assessment and faculty assessment of clinical performance in restorative dentistry: A prospective pilot study

Summary: This study investigated whether deliberate training could bridge the gap between self-assessment and faculty assessment for undergraduate dental students and explored students' perception of self-assessment and its impact on learning and motivation. Results showed that bias in self-assessment decreased after training, and there was a significant difference in bias between the first and last encounter. The ability of students to pinpoint strengths improved consistently, while their ability to identify areas for improvement was volatile. Overall, students had a positive perception of self-assessment. These findings suggest that deliberate training may bridge the gap between self-assessment and faculty assessment.

Summary: COVID-19 has brought attention to the significance of meaningful engagement between communities and health authorities, particularly in conflict-affected countries like Syria. This study examines the perspectives of Syrian communities in government-controlled areas (GCA), autonomous administration-controlled areas (AACA), and opposition-controlled areas (OCA) regarding COVID-19 and the responses of health authorities. The findings indicate that fear of COVID-19 and willingness to adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) decreased as the local epidemics progressed and NPIs disrupted access to household essentials. Misinformation and vaccine hesitancy were common in all areas, attributed to lack of transparency and mistrust of local health authorities. The study concludes that community engagement efforts were minimal, leading to inadequate contextualization of interventions and failure to address community understandings and needs.

The findings indicate that adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions decreased as the local COVID-19 epidemics progressed, and access to essential resources such as work and food was disrupted. Misinformation and vaccine hesitancy were common in all areas, linked to lack of transparency and mistrust of local health authorities and information sources. The study also revealed minimal community engagement efforts and failures to contextualize interventions based on community understandings and needs.
