Fossil leaves of Populus L. (Salicaceae Mirb.) from the upper Pliocene of Tengchong, Yunnan, southwestern China

Zhuo-Er Wang et al.

Summary: Fossil leaves of Populus with fine cuticular structures were discovered in the upper Pliocene of western Yunnan, China. These leaves closely resemble the extant species P. rotundifolia Griff. The findings suggest that western Yunnan may have reached its present height by the late Pliocene.

Mahonia vs. Berberis Unloaded: Generic Delimitation and Infrafamilial Classification of Berberidaceae Based on Plastid Phylogenomics

Chia-Lun Hsieh et al.

Summary: The family Berberidaceae consists of a diverse group of plants that are valued for horticultural and medicinal purposes. However, the classification of this family has been controversial and its tribal classification has not been formally proposed. In this study, we assembled and analyzed plastome sequences from 23 species to reconstruct the phylogenomic relationships within the family. Our results support the recognition of three subfamilies and propose new tribes within these subfamilies. We also support the classification of 19 genera, including the recognition of new genera that are morphologically and evolutionarily distinct from previously recognized genera. Our study provides important insights into the taxonomy and evolution of Berberidaceae.

Fossil Podocarpus (Podocarpaceae) from the lower Pliocene of Tengchong, Yunnan Province, China and its biogeographic significance

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: A new species, Podocarpus pliomacrophyllus sp. nov., has been described from lower Pliocene deposits in western Yunnan, China, showing gross morphology and cuticular structure similar to extant P. macrophyllus. Molecular data suggests that the genus Podocarpus originated from Gondwana, with the subgenus Foliolatus diverging from the subgenus Podocarpus during the early Miocene. Fossils from Tengchong indicate the subgenus Foliolatus spread from India to western Yunnan before the early Pliocene, and subsequently to southeastern China.

Mahonia lancasteri (Berberidaceae), a new species originating from Sichuan (China) described from cultivation

Olivier Colin et al.

Summary: Mahonia lancasteri is described as a new species from west-central Sichuan, China, occurring naturally in sympatry with several other Mahonia species. Detailed description, distributional data, ecological information, and a phylogenetic analysis were provided to determine the close affinities of M. lancasteri.

Late Eocene sclerophyllous oak from Markam Basin, Tibet, and its biogeographic implications

Linlin Chen et al.

Summary: The sclerophyllous evergreen broad-leaved forests in the Hengduan Mountains are mainly composed of sclerophyllous oak trees from the Quercus section Heterobalanus. The distribution and development of these forests are closely associated with the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Research has shown that the origin of these oak trees may be much older than previously believed, dating back to the late Eocene period. The expansion of cooler and drier habitats, along with stabilizing selection, has contributed to the spread and development of this oak tree section through time, contrary to previous hypotheses.

New early oligocene zircon U-Pb dates for the 'Miocene' Wenshan Basin, Yunnan, China: Biodiversity and paleoenvironment

Yimin Tian et al.

Summary: The sedimentary basins of Yunnan in Southwest China provide detailed records of Cenozoic paleoenvironmental change, important for understanding the development of modern floral diversity in the region. High resolution U-Pb dating has allowed researchers to redefine the age of fossil-bearing strata in the Wenshan Basin, indicating a significantly greater antiquity than previously recognized. This age revision highlights late Eocene-early Oligocene regional tectonism and suggests a Paleogene origin for Asia's high plant diversity.
