The last interglacial-glacial cycle in the Meuse Valley (southern Belgium) inferred from the amphibian and reptile assemblages: implications for Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans

Hugues-Alexandre Blain et al.

Summary: This study describes the herpetofaunal assemblages in 18 caves in Belgium and provides a comprehensive understanding of the animal community during the last interglacial-glacial cycle using the Quaternary collections. The study also reconstructs the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate of selected sites using a quantified ecology method.

Applying the UDA-ODA discrimination technique to a herpetological association: the case of the Middle Palaeolithic site of El Salt (Alcoi, Spain)

Rafael Marquina-Blasco et al.

Summary: This article reports on the El Salt site in Alcoi, Spain, which is a key location for understanding the disappearance of Neanderthals in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The study applied the UDA-ODA discrimination technique to analyze the paleoclimatic context of the site. The results indicate alternating cold and wet periods with warm and dry periods, and the climate was slightly warmer than it is today. The abandonment of the site by Neanderthals may have occurred during an arid phase.
