Transcriptome Mining Expands Knowledge of RNA Viruses across the Plant Kingdom

Summary: Our current understanding of plant viruses is mainly based on economically important host species. However, we have limited knowledge about viruses infecting basal plant lineages such as ferns, lycophytes, bryophytes, and charophytes. To expand our understanding, we conducted a broad-scale viral survey of species across the plant kingdom. We found that basal plants harbor a wide diversity of RNA viruses, including some that may belong to a new virus family. This study provides insights into the evolutionary history of core plant virus genes and genome segments and emphasizes the scarcity of research in these species.

A new flavi-like virus identified in populations of wild carrots

Summary: We have discovered a new virus related to the Flaviviridae family in wild carrots using a high-throughput sequencing method. This virus, named carrot flavi-like virus 1 (CtFLV-1), has a large genome and shares similarities with flavi-like viruses from arthropods as well as a plant-associated virus, gentian Kobu-sho-associated virus (GKSaV). The similarities in their sequences suggest that GKSaV and CtFLV-1 could belong to a new genus of plant-associated viruses.

Summary: This study discovered a novel putative-related movement gene module, called tetra-cistron movement block (TCMB), in the virus-like transcriptomes of moss and Antarctic flowering plant. These TCMBs are encoded by smaller RNA components of putative two-component viruses related to plant benyviruses. The involvement of replicative beny-like helicases in the evolution of the BMB and TCMB movement genetic modules was suggested based on phylogenetic analysis.

Distinct Mechanisms of Endomembrane Reorganization Determine Dissimilar Transport Pathways in Plant RNA Viruses

Summary: Plant viruses utilize the endomembrane system of infected cells for replication and cell-to-cell transport. The replication of viral RNA genomes occurs in the cytoplasm and requires virus-encoded proteins to induce reorganization of the endomembrane compartments. The transport of virus genomes between cells is facilitated by virus-encoded movement proteins. Different plant viruses utilize different sets of movement proteins and employ distinct mechanisms of endomembrane reorganization for cell-to-cell transport.
