Characterization of a 2016-2017 Human Seasonal H3 Influenza A Virus Spillover Now Endemic to US Swine

Aditi Sharma et al.

Summary: In 2017, a reverse-zoonotic transmission of a human seasonal H3 influenza A virus into swine was detected. Genetic characterization revealed the origin and genetic features of the virus, and it was found that pigs can transmit the virus to other pigs. This study is of great importance for vaccine antigen selection and prevention of influenza pandemics.

Influenza A Viruses and Zoonotic Events-AreWe Creating Our Own Reservoirs?

Susanne Kessler et al.

Summary: Zoonotic infections of humans with influenza A viruses (IAVs) from animal reservoirs can lead to severe disease and pandemic outbreaks. The creation of manmade reservoirs through livestock farming has significantly facilitated the transmission of IAVs between humans and animals. Controlling IAV spread within these animal reservoirs and monitoring the emergence of new strains with pandemic potential are crucial in reducing zoonotic events.
