Prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma using age and liver stiffness on transient elastography after hepatitis C virus eradication

Masato et al.

Summary: Liver stiffness measurement is a useful tool in assessing liver fibrosis. This study identifies age and liver stiffness as important risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following hepatitis C (HCV) eradication. Low-risk individuals have a lower incidence of HCC.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of HBV and HCV infection in patients with cirrhosis globally, finding that nearly two-thirds of cirrhosis cases are caused by HBV and HCV, which will help in achieving the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis.

Recent advances in the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection for special populations and remaining problems

Goki Suda et al.

Summary: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and liver transplantation (LT). Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have shown better efficacy and safety in special populations such as patients with HIV/HCV coinfection, HCV infection after LT, and dialysis patients, but unresolved issues remain.

Sofosbuvir plus velpatasvir treatment for hepatitis C virus in patients with decompensated cirrhosis: a Japanese real-world multicenter study

Yuki Tahata et al.

Summary: This study in Japan evaluated the real-world efficacy and safety of sofosbuvir plus velpatasvir (SOF/VEL) treatment for patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related decompensated cirrhosis. The results showed that the treatment was effective for both compensated and decompensated cirrhosis patients, with similar outcomes to previous studies, but with risks of treatment discontinuation and liver-related deaths. Further evaluation is needed for patients with poor hepatic reserve to determine continuous improvement after viral clearance.

Baseline serum angiopoietin-2 and VEGF levels predict the deterioration of the liver functional reserve during lenvatinib treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma

Taku Shigesawa et al.

Summary: In patients with unresectable HCC treated with lenvatinib, the deterioration of Child-Pugh score may be predicted based on baseline serum levels of ANG2 and VEGF, with patients having low VEGF and high ANG2 more likely to experience score deterioration. Evaluation of these biomarkers could help identify patients at risk of liver functional reserve deterioration during systemic therapy.

Baseline elevated serum angiopoietin-2 predicts long-term non-regression of liver fibrosis after direct-acting antiviral therapy for hepatitis C

Naoki Kawagishi et al.

Summary: This study found that advanced liver fibrosis stage and high baseline Ang2 levels were significantly associated with non-regression at 96 weeks after DAA therapy. In patients with F3/4, baseline Ang2 levels were associated with non-regression of liver fibrosis stage. Post-treatment Ang2 levels and controlled attenuation parameter values at SVR24 were significantly associated with non-regression of liver fibrosis stage in patients with F3/4 between SVR24 and SVR96. Serum Ang2 levels are an important target for monitoring and therapy.

Frequency and Characteristics of Overestimated Renal Function in Japanese Patients with Chronic Liver Disease and Its Relation to Sarcopenia

Sonoe Yoshida et al.

Summary: The study found that up to 24.8% of Japanese patients with chronic liver disease had overestimated renal function, which was related to indicators of sarcopenia. Liver cirrhosis and psoas muscle mass index were significantly associated with overestimated renal function, and patients with overestimated renal function showed a more frequent loss of skeletal muscle mass.
