Development of Recombinant Infectious Hepatitis E Virus Harboring the nanoKAZ Gene and Its Application in Drug Screening

Putu Prathiwi Primadharsini et al.

Summary: Bioluminescent reporter viruses are important tools in molecular virological research and have been widely used in studying viral life cycles and developing antiviral drugs. This study developed the HEV-nanoKAZ system and successfully applied it in drug screening to identify four hit drugs with anti-HEV activity.

Maternal and fetal outcomes of pregnancies complicated by acute hepatitis E and the impact of HIV status: A cross-sectional study in Namibia

Steffie Heemelaar et al.

Summary: Namibia has been experiencing an outbreak of hepatitis E genotype 2 since 2017, with a high mortality rate among pregnant women. HIV-infected pregnant women not adherent to antiretroviral therapy were more likely to develop acute liver failure, highlighting the need for further investigation in larger cohorts.

Real-world effectiveness of early molnupiravir or nirmatrelvir- ritonavir in hospitalised patients with COVID-19 without supplemental oxygen requirement on admission during Hong Kong's omicron BA.2 wave: a retrospective cohort study

Carlos K. H. Wong et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the clinical and virological outcomes associated with molnupiravir or nirmatrelvir-ritonavir use in hospitalised patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. The results showed that recipients of oral antivirals had a lower risk of all-cause mortality, disease progression, need for oxygen therapy, and a shorter time to reaching a low viral burden. The study supports the early use of oral antivirals in this population of patients.

Treatment for chronic hepatitis E virus infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Myrte Gorris et al.

Summary: According to a systematic review, treatment with ribavirin can achieve a sustained virological response (SVR) in 78% of patients, with side effects such as anemia requiring dose reduction or blood transfusion in 37% of patients. For chronic hepatitis E, ribavirin should be considered as the first treatment step. Treatment with pegylated interferon-alpha increases the risk of transplant rejection and should be administered with caution.
