Summary: COVID-19 is a highly infectious respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Endothelial cells and the glycocalyx layer play a central role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Inflammatory mediators, reactive oxygen species, matrix metalloproteases, glycocalyx fragments, and viral proteins may contribute to endothelial glycocalyx damage in COVID-19. Potential therapeutic strategies targeting the glycocalyx layer are discussed.

IFIT3 and IFIT5 Play Potential Roles in Innate Immune Response of Porcine Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells to Highly Pathogenic Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus

Summary: The roles of IFIT3 and IFIT5 in inhibiting HP-PRRSV replication in porcine pulmonary MVECs were investigated, and the effects of astragalus polysaccharides (APS) on them were studied. It was found that IFIT3 and IFIT5 play an important role in inhibiting HP-PRRSV replication, and APS suppresses the multiplication of the virus by upregulating their expression.

Microvascular dysfunction in COVID-19: the MYSTIC study

Vascular Endothelial Damage in the Pathogenesis of Organ Injury in Severe COVID-19

Summary: The study investigated the association between endothelial damage and immune dysregulation with organ failure, thrombus formation, and death in 82 patients with COVID-19, finding a direct role of endotheliopathy in organ failure and an association between dysregulated immune response and respiratory failure, liver injury, and death. Thrombi from COVID-19 patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation showed increased neutrophil accumulation and neutrophil extracellular traps compared to non-COVID-19 thrombi.
