Effect of probiotic lactobacilli supplementation on growth parameters, blood profile, productive performance, and fecal microbiology in feedlot cattle

Flavia I. Mansilla et al.

Summary: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with probiotic characteristics were fed to beef cattle, resulting in improved body condition/growth, nutritional-metabolic status, and a reduction in E. coli O157:H7 shedding. When administered to the cattle, Lactobacillus acidophilus CRL2074, Limosilactobacillus fermentum CRL2085, and Limosilactobacillus mucosae CRL2069, either alone or in combination, showed positive effects on muscle-skeletal development, weight gain, and overall health. The administration of CRL2085 for 40 days resulted in a 43% reduction in pathogen shedding. These findings suggest that LAB supplementation can improve the productivity and safety of beef cattle.

Soybean protein isolate treated with transglutaminase (TGase) enhances the heat tolerance of selected lactic acid bacteria strains to spray drying

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: TGase treatment of soy protein isolate (SPI) improved the survival of Lb. bulgaricus CICC 6047 during spray drying by increasing thermal stability. TGase treatment resulted in a smoother bacterial cell surface and increased alpha-helical structure in SPI. Chemical bonding analysis showed enhanced heat resistance in the enzyme-modified SPI. The addition of TGase treated SPI improved the survival percentage of other LAB strains after spray drying and during storage.

Role of probiotics in ruminant nutrition as natural modulators of health and productivity of animals in tropical countries: an overview

Nitish A. Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Given the increasing population in developing countries located in the tropics, there has been a growing demand for animal products. Probiotics, as a substitute for antibiotics in animal diets, have gained popularity. Probiotics, derived from bacterial and yeast species, have been shown to improve the health and productivity of animals in tropical countries. They have also been proven to minimize environmental consequences. However, the results of studies have been inconsistent, and more research is needed to select the most effective strains of probiotics.

Association between yeast product feeding and milk production of lactating dairy cows: Multilevel meta-analysis and meta-regression

A. Abdelli et al.

Summary: This study provides strong evidence that commercially available yeast product (YP) supplementation is positively associated with milk yield and other milk components in lactating dairy cows. However, the association between YP supplementation and milk yield is not observed in primiparous cows during mid-and late lactation or in cows fed a high neutral detergent fiber diet. Moreover, the improvement in milk yield is higher when YP supplementation starts before calving compared to after calving. Additionally, YP supplementation is not associated with an increase in dry matter intake (DMI).

Microencapsulation of probiotic starter culture in protein-carbohydrate carriers using spray and freeze-drying processes: Implementation in whey-based beverages

Natasa Obradovic et al.

Summary: The production and characterization of a novel type of protein-carbohydrate carriers for functional beverages, focusing on cell protection during fermentation, gastrointestinal, and storage conditions, are shown in this study. Probiotic starter culture was microencapsulated using spray and freeze-drying techniques and then implemented in whey-based beverages. The encapsulation efficiency results were over 76.8% and 81.4% after spray and freeze-drying, respectively. The freeze-dried carriers showed a higher survival rate during storage compared to the ones encapsulated by spray-drying. Microencapsulation significantly improved cell viability in gastrointestinal and storage conditions. Both encapsulation techniques showed potential in cell preservation during production and storage.

Studies on Upgradation of Waste Fish Oil to Lipid-Rich Yeast Biomass in Yarrowia lipolytica Batch Cultures

Agata Urszula Fabiszewska et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of fish waste oil in nitrogen-limited Yarrowia lipolytica yeast batch cultures, finding that the waste carbon source stimulated single cell oil production. Very long chain fatty acids were present in yeast biomass regardless of culture conditions, including DHA, EPA, eicosenic, and erucic acids. pH regulation did not affect cellular lipid yield, while increasing oxygenation and reducing inoculum amount had a positive impact on culture parameters in waste fish oil medium. Further research on upgrading the waste oil is recommended due to its high polyphenol content and lower susceptibility to oxidation compared to microbial oil from control olive oil medium.
