Riverscape approaches in practice: perspectives and applications

Christian E. Torgersen et al.

Summary: Over the past 30 years, landscape perspectives in riverine ecology have become increasingly popular, leading to the development of various approaches for conceptualizing, mapping and understanding 'riverscapes'. These perspectives now guide principles and approaches in inland fisheries and watershed management, with scientific literature on riverscapes growing rapidly in the last two decades, indicating their importance in freshwater science and management. The use of high-resolution, spatially intensive techniques in mapping physical and biological characteristics of rivers and floodplains has improved understanding of spatial patterns at various scales, essential for successful management of river ecosystems and implementation of conservation programs.

Modeling Decadal Salt Marsh Development: Variability of the Salt Marsh Edge Under Influence of Waves and Sediment Availability

P. W. J. M. Willemsen et al.

Summary: Salt marshes are important for coastal protection, and their width is crucial for their effectiveness. This study uses numerical modeling to examine how sediment availability and hydrodynamic forcing affect the retreat and expansion of salt marshes. The results show that salt marshes are sensitive to physical stress, with higher stress leading to retreat and lower stress enabling expansion. Additionally, sediment supply plays a role in determining the behavior of salt marshes forced by higher waves.

Hydrogeomorphic Scaling and Ecohydraulics for Designing Rescaled Channel and Floodplain Geometry in Regulated Gravel-Cobble Bed Rivers for Pacific Salmon Habitat

Rocko A. Brown

Summary: This paper reviews analytical methods for determining the size of rescaled channel and floodplain mesohabitat units in regulated gravel-cobble bed rivers for Pacific salmon habitat restoration using hydrogeomorphic scaling and ecohydraulics. These methods can restore habitat quantity and quality by rescaling the river corridor and provide environmental benefits.

Using decades of spawning data and hydraulic models to construct a temperature-dependent resource selection function for management of an endangered salmonid

Peter N. Dudley et al.

Summary: In North America, man-made barriers hinder access to salmonid spawning habitat, necessitating costly restoration efforts. Evaluating the quality of restored spawning habitat requires understanding salmon preferences for water velocity and depth, which may be influenced by other variables. This study presents a low-cost method for collecting and analyzing these data, combining aerial surveys, hydraulic modeling, and generalized linear models. The results highlight the interactions between environmental variables and habitat selection, emphasizing the importance of considering potential interactions when using or producing resource selection functions.

Field evaluation of a compact, polarizing topo-bathymetric lidar across a range of river conditions

Paul J. Kinzel et al.

Summary: The study conducted field trials using a prototype compact topo-bathymetric lidar sensor to measure river depths accurately. Comparisons between measured data and sensor depth data indicated varying application effects of the sensor under different water depths, with river optical properties affecting measurement accuracy.

Merging computational fluid dynamics and machine learning to reveal animal migration strategies

Simone Olivetti et al.

Summary: Understanding how migratory animals interact with dynamic physical environments is a major challenge in migration biology. A new methodology using computational fluid dynamic modeling and animal tracking data can predict migratory movements and locomotion behavior accurately. The framework can help understand how migrants respond to local-flow conditions and how migratory behavior changes over time and space.

Some (fish might) like it hot: Habitat quality and fish growth from past to future climates

William Jeff Reeder et al.

Summary: The study found that projected climate change may have negative impacts on fish habitats and survival, particularly affecting the spawning habitat quality for Chinook salmon. However, warmer stream water temperatures in the future could benefit the growth of fish in high elevation cold-water streams, potentially leading to larger Chinook salmon sizes.
